Words from a friend:
My friend Yevette Hoppe was unique in many ways. She was strong, talented and Yevette was frugal. She loved to grow vegetables and make good soup that we ate together many times. Yevette lived through World War II in Europe. She endured great hunger, fear and suffering, and I think that probably affected how she lived her life. Most of all, I remember the evenings when she would invite her friends over to play the piano while she would sing. I visited her often while she was in nursing home and she always recognized me. Yvette was a great woman and she was my friend. May God give her peace and welcome her back home.
Hana Shepherd
Mother to Son – Langston Hughes
Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
It’s had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I’se been a-climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landin’s,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light.
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now—
For I’se still goin’, honey,
I’se still climbin’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
23rd Psalm
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
For you are with m;
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the says of my life,
And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
