William J. Mahl, age 90, of Michigan City, died Friday, May 1, 2009 at Horton VNA Hospice, Valparaiso, IN. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home with Pastor Kim Cole officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 5 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City. Mr. Mahl was born July 12, 1918 in St. Paul, MN to Julius and Sena (Petersen) Mahl, both of whom preceded him in death. On Sept. 4, 1937 in Crown Point, IN he married Hope Annabelle Deming, she passed away Sept. 16, 1999. Surviving are his sons William F. (Jeanne) Mahl of Peoria, IL and Larry S. (Susan) Mahl of McHenry, IL, special friend Betty Slisher of Michigan City, grandchildren Jason B. Mahl, Heather B. Mahl, William G. Mahl, Scott A. Mahl and Bethany L. Mahl, and 7 great-grandchildren. Mr. Mahl began his NIPSCO career in 1941 as a yardman “B” and for the next year was named stores clerk and utilityman. He moved up to fireman in 1944 and attained his “A” classification in 1950. He rose to assistant plant watch engineer in 1956 and was promoted to plant watch engineer in 1957. He was then promoted to production supervisor at the Michigan City generating station. He was a proud father and enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed playing bridge, stamp collecting and traveling. He was a faithful Cubs fan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Share Foundation or Shriners Children’s Hospital.
