Vera L. Betters

Vera L. Betters, age 86, of Crown Point, Indiana, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010. She was born October 13, 1923 in Rockford, Ohio the youngest of 7 children. In 1943 she married the love of her life, Raymond J. Betters in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. They shared 56 years together. They lived in Merrillville for forty years before retiring to enjoy Florida and Colorado. She had a competitive spirit and loved playing golf, bowling, cards, TV games and bingo and enjoyed watching sports and visiting the casinos. She was a pleasant, kind-hearted person who had a positive outlook on life. Most of all, she was a devoted wife, loving mother and caring grandmother and great-grandmother. We will miss her and were blessed by her presence here among us. She is preceded in death by her husband Raymond, her parents, 4 sisters and 1 brother. She is survived by 1 son, David R. Sharon Betters of Fort Collins, Colorado; 2 daughters: Susan E. Tonk of Crown Point, Indiana and Jill Betters Alonso of La Crescenta, California; 1 sister, Eileen Betz of Bluffton, Indiana; 4 granddaughters: Renee Tom Welch, Heather fiancé, Chad Christophersen Tonk, Kristine Mike Ball and Courtney Mike Papp; 1 grandson, Raymond Alonso; 3 great-grandsons: Austin Welch, Landon Ball, Kellen Ball; and 1 great-granddaughter, Ashley Welch. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Geisen Funeral Home, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, IN with Pastor Richard S. Brown officiating. Services will conclude at the funeral home with cremation to follow. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 from 12:00 PM until the time of service at 2:00 PM at Geisen Funeral Home, Merrillville. Hello Betters family! I extend my sympathy at the loss of Vera. Always a smile and fun to see. I have fond memories of visiting, playing with a really cool John Deere toy farm impliment set and going on a Canada fishing trip with Ray and friends. Hope you are all doing well and wish you the best. I am blessed with beautiful children and grandchildren. All is well here. Love, Craig

Aunt Vera was a wonderful person. I am very fortunate to have many fond memories of her. My love and prayers are with you all.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with you all. Mom always loved and cared about her sister Vera. I'm sure they're together now, probably playing Scrabble with Aunt Dorothy. May they all hit triple letter words including the letters q and z. Your mom and the others were part of an amazing, bright, and loving family.

Please know that I am thinking of you and remembering all of the great times that we had as children. We grew up in the best of times when children knew all of their relatives because we saw each other often. Love you, Margie

Dear David, Susan and Jill-- Your Mom and Dad were two of my favorites. When Sally and I visited in Fort Collins they made us wait at a store in town while they came down the hill because they knew we couldn't find our way to their home. Your Mom didn't know if we could have a beer or wine so she eased her way into the subject and then we all had a good laugh when she realized we were in our forties and hadn't been under my Dad's rules for many years. Just one example of the great folks you had. Also, you may not know it, but Sally is from Dalton, MA-- just next door to where your Dad was born in Pittsfield.
