Shirley Mae (Glanz) Burns, 83, Michigan City, died at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday (December 30, 2008) at LaPorte Hospital.
Services will be held Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s United Lutheran Church, with Rev. John L. Mikenas III and Rev. David Seifert officiating. Visitation will be Friday, January 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.
Shirley was born on May 9, 1925 in Michigan City, Indiana to Herman C. and Lillian (Jesse) Glanz, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a dedicated homemaker, and the administrative assistant for her husband’s business, Irving Burns Contracting. As a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother she always loved to prepare family dinners and shop with her daughters. Her joy was to share recipes with friends. She also enjoyed needlework, making afghans and other articles for her family. She and her family traveled extensively and enjoyed the shared experience. She was nuturing, caring and loving and will be missed greatly.
Shirley and Irving Burns, her childhood sweetheart, were married in St. Luke United Lutheran Church, April 20, 1945. She served at the church as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was also a member of the St. Luke Choir and Women of the Church organization.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Irving; Daughters Sharee (Michael) Morse residing in Michigan City and Cindee (Thomas) Essling residing in Indianapolis. Grandchildren Shanna (Bradley) Faris, Emily (David) Gonzalez, Lindsay, Nicholas, Elizabeth and Joseph Essling. Great grandchildren Olivia, Tyler and Graham Faris and Harrison Gonzalez; and a sister Lois Stupeck also survive. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
