Shirley A. Lunsford (nee Clay), age 87, of Merrillville, IN, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 67 years, Deacon Malcolm A. Lunsford; 4 children: Randy (Linda) Lunsford, Brad (Cheryl Dodson) Lunsford, Deborah (Ricky Matan) Lunsford, Eric (Lisa) Lunsford; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and her nieces, nephews, and many good friends.

Shirley’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Shirley’s caregivers who have become family to them.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents: Maurice and Garealdean Clay; grandson, Christopher Thomas Heylin; and sister, Mary Louise (Joe) Alonso.

Shirley was born and raised in Gary, IN. She was a graduate of Horace Mann High School, Class of 1955. She then graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing and served her community for several years. Shirley was a longtime member of Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and a current member of Holy Martyrs Catholic Church. She belonged to many Church clubs and participated in several activities there. Shirley was passionate about child advocacy and helped so many over the years.

Services for Shirley to be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Shirley’s name to Holy Martyrs Catholic Church.

In memory of Shirley A. Lunsford, Roberta Toby lit a candle

I just learned of Shirley's passing. She was such a cheerful person. I always enjoyed when she and Mal came to Southern Indiana for vacations and we would all go out to eat and have a good time and when we used to have the Family Reunions in Kentucky. I miss those days and being with family. My heart goes out to Mal and the children.

So sorry for the loss of Shirley. She was a loving wife or I should say Bride to Malcolm. A loving mother & grandmother, too. She always had a smile for everyone. We loved her sense of humor. She will be dearly missed. May she rest in God's peace.

Our prayers are with you as you mourn the loss of a truly beautiful woman. Shirley always stepped forward to help whenever she could. She was faith-filled, caring, and quick with a funny response.
