Sherman L. Gumns, age 84, LaPorte, died peacefully Saturday April 24, 2010 at the Horton VNA Hospice Center of Valparaiso. Funeral services will be held Wednesday 1:00 P.M. at the Carlisle Funeral Home, with Chaplain Craig A. Forwalter officiating. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Carlisle Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6-8P.M. Burial will be made at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, where full Military rights will be conducted by VFW Post# 2536 & American Legion Skwiat Post 451. Mr. Gums was born the son of Otto W. Gumns and May (Otto) Gumns on January 9, 1926 in Michigan City. On June 26, 1947 Sherman was united in marriage to the former Shirley A. Malott in LaPorte. Mrs. Gumns died in 2004 after celebrating more than 57 years of marriage. Mr. Gumns is survived by his sister, Virginia Woodruff of Michigan City, Brother, Joe Gumns of Michigan City. Niece and Caregiver , Violet Smith of LaPorte. Numerous Nieces and Nephews also survive. Mr. Gumns was preceded in death by his brothers; Andrew, Alfred, Paul, August, Arthur, Richard Gumns ,and Sister’s; Elsie Burton, Rose Huntsman, and Hazel Russell. Mr. Gumns had worked at Dwyer Products for over forty years, retiring in 1985. He had also worked at Michiana Products before joining the ARMY. Mr. Gumns enjoyed flying model airplanes that he built. His organic vegetable garden was enjoyed by many, and also was know to have some of the best fruits and vegetables. Mr. Gumns was a veteran of the US ARMY of WWII, where he served in the Central European Theater. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Donor’s Choice. \
