Ron Black

January 17, 1938 - April 24, 2010

Ron Black “Toby”, age 72, of Lowell, IN, passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at his home. Ron was a 1956 graduate of Lew Wallace High School and a graduate of Indiana University Bloomington, where he earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees. Ron was a teacher, coach, athletic director, and principal for 30 years. He was an avid golfer, part-time fisherman, and a Chicago sports fan, especially the Cubs. Ron was his grandchildren's number one fan and rarely missed an event involving his grandchildren. Ron was born in Lily, Kentucky to late parents, Virgil and Ethel Black. He is survived by his wife: Joy Black; children: Wendy Mike Magley of Lowell, IN and Mickey Mary Black of Dyer, IN; grandchildren: Whitney and Austin Magley, and Lauren, Westen, Caden, and Addisyn Black; sisters: Bobbie Dennis Duranczyk and Judy Black; brothers: Dedder Ethel Black and Keith Black; sisters-in-law: Barbara Black Eckert and Diane Ray Teitsma. He was preceded in death by his daughter: Sara Black; brother: Ralph Black, and sister: Diana Lynn Black. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Geisen Funeral-Cremation & Reception Centre NOTE: NEW LOCATION-2 blocks east of Broadway at 606 E 113th Ave. Crown Point, IN. Interment to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, IN. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 from 2:00 to 5:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Geisen Funeral-Cremation & Reception Centre. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Lowell Middle School Athletic Fund. I just learned of Mr. Black's passing in the Lowell Tribune. Sending my condolences to the entire Black family in you time of sorrow.

Mrs. Black, Mickey, & Wendy, I just learned of Mr. Blacks passing this morning and would like to extend my condolences. I was impressed when I first met him back in 7th grade and he actually knew my name. He was always very nice to me and my parents and I found him to be a great educator although I remember him giving me a detention in 8th grade that I still don't think I deserved. I had the pleasure of seeing him again a few years ago when I came back out to Indiana and played golf with my Dad. I found him to be the same nice man I remembered back in my younger days. Mr. Black was a great role model and an excellent educator. We are all very luck to have had him as a mentor.

We hope that the fruit of the spirit is with you all, with love and concerns.

I am so sorry for your loss. My Mom Joan Barker was Mr. Blacks secretary for many years. She really enjoyed working with him, and had many good things to say about him. I can only hope that they are sharing memories of Lowell Middle School once again.

What a constant, consistent mentor and educator Ron was to the Bielefeld children! All were lucky enough to come under his influence at LMS. His sense of humor and his understanding of the complexity of adolescence belied his somewhat stern demeanor. As a parent volunteer, I can say it was a great pleasure to work with him as it was clear he was devoted to the kids in the classroom and in the athletic arena. God rest him well and peace be with those who love him as their many happy memories bring comfort and healing.

I learned to like Mr. Black and respect him as the assistant principal when I was subbing at the Lowell middle school. He was highly respected by faculty and students alike. I'm sorry to hear of his passing.

Mickey, Wendy and Mrs. Black, I was so saddened by the phone call from my dad yesterday. I remember Mr. Black in so many fond ways, especially driving the bball players and cheerleaders around to 7th and 8th grade games and you could always count on him to be at EVERY sporting match, game etc. He supported us all like a loving stern father...maybe I was just a little bit scared...after all he was the assistant principal. As I grew up and became an adult, I would see him at events with my mom,and he was always quick to ask how my life was and share in the details of Mickey and Wendy's families. My thoughts and prayers are with you all....he will be missed.
