Robert E. Wehner

January 12, 1928 - May 22, 2010

Robert E. Wehner, age 82, of Crown Point, IN, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at St. Anthony Hospice. He is survived by one sister, Adeline Backe of Crown Point; one nephew, Kenneth Rita Backe of Crown Point, 3 nieces: Patricia Paul Christman of Crown Point, Kathy Steve Pasek of Bartlett, IL; and Joann Wehner of Lemon Grove, CA. Robert is preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Josephine Austgen Wehner; brother, Francis and Mary Franz Wehner; sister, Dolores Wehner; brother-in-law, Edward Backe and 2 nephews, Charles and Gerard Backe. Robert trained for and worked in financial records for the following companies: Hub Electric, Gateway Transportation, Mercy Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital from which he retired in 2001 at the age of 73. He will be greatly missed by his friends at the Tuesday evening bingo at St. Mary's in Griffith and also the daily Mass attendees at Our Lady of Consolation. Even before Robert retired he was active in many charities and causes. He and his sister, Dolores, were generous contributors of their time and with their prowess in baking provided many delicious cakes, cookies, fudge etc for the Sister's fund raising efforts in the start up of St. Anthony Hospital. Since then he has been very generous with his time and monetary contributions to many charities. Two of his main recipients were St. Anthony Hospice and Sojourner Truth House in Gary. Until his illness, he provided Sojourner with a jam packed car full of groceries every two weeks for their food pantry. Also, he provided many of the items for the hospice annual garage sale and their silent auction. His generosity will be missed by many and his annual production of fruitcakes will be missed. Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, May 29, 2010 from 9:30 -10:30 AM DIRECTLY at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, 8303 Taft St, Merrillville, IN, followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:30 AM with Fr. Peter Muha officiating. Inurnment at St. Mary's Cemetery in Crown Point, IN. Memorials may be given to St. Anthony Hospice, 203 Franciscan Dr., Crown Point, IN 46307 or to Sojourner Truth House, 410 W. 13th Ave., Gary, IN. 46407 Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre is in charge of arrangements. No words can tell you how much we will miss our Dear Friend tree He was a big part of our lives. A loving friend with a BIG heart! as he was tall. We will miss him alot and Our only regret was that we were not there at the end to hold his hand and kiss him goodbye. Just a few more hours and we could have, but he was even then looking out for us and not letting us see him this way and remembering him with the smile instead. You will be in our prayers daily my friend. May you Rest in Peace now without Pain and be with your family in Heaven till we meet again someday. My heart goes out to Bob's family and friends. We will miss him in so many ways: His presence in our life, his concern for Sojourner Truth House needs, his generosity, his smile and so many other beautiful ways he shared our life. BOB WAS VERY SPECIAL TO ME..I WAS ONE OF HIS DOLLIES FROM ST MARY'S BUSINESS OFFICE. I TALKED TO HIM AROUND THE END OF JANUARY..HE AND MY MOM, PAULINE BRADFORD, WOULD SEND EACH OTHER CARDS, AND BOB AND I WORKED TOGETHER FOR AT LEAST 15 YEARS...I WILL MISS HIM..MY MOM PASSED IN NOV AND THEN MY DAD IN DEC AND BOB HAD SENT ME A CARD DURING THAT TIME AND I CALLED AND TALKED TO HIM.MY CONDOLENCES TO HIS FAMILY.
