Melinda Maturo left a message on October 12, 2008:
Pam-I taught with you one semester in Lake Station as I taught for the maternity leave for Kathi Steel when she was home with Brett. I just wanted to express my sympathy to you for your loss. While I didn't know your husband, I do remember thinking that you seemed to have a close family, and my heart went out to you when I heard the news. May good memories sustain you and your children as you face some difficult days ahead. Know that those who know you, or even those who know of you, are praying for your strength, that you will find peace. Please accept my condolences. God bless you.
Kevin Parkerson left a message on September 20, 2008:
I had the privilege of working near Coach Renn's boat slip four summers in a row. His helpful nature and good sense of humor always made work there much better. Whether he was giving tips on how to use the weed whipper or cracking jokes about the Ike's dilapidated facilities, he always managed to make the day fun. He was a great teacher, a better friend, and one with an innate ability to brighten the lives of those around him. It was both a shock and a shame to hear he had passed, and he will be greatly missed. My condolences to the Renn family for your loss.

Pam.......We would like to extend our sincere sympathies to you and your family on Rich's passing. Marianne and I waited in line quite awhile at Geisen's Tuesday night to personally pay our respects, but the line wasn't moving, so we had to leave, unfortunately. We will miss Rich's lively and fun-loving personality and wit. We often recall with fondness his dancing with Marianne to Who Let the Dogs Out at Pete Hedges' retirement party. All the best to you.

To the Renn Family, My deepest condolences to you and your family. I had the great privilege of being mentored as both a student and athlete by Rich. Throughout my education, travels, and of the many teachers, professors, and people I??ve come across, I can say without a doubt that Rich was by far my favorite and most influential. I know I am not alone in saying this, as I have seen first hand the many other student??s and athlete??s lives he??s touched and changed, and who simply would not be the people they are today had they not had the immense opportunity of meeting him. He was a man you looked forward to seeing everyday; a personality larger than life. I can??t remember a time that he wasn??t smiling, laughing or completely enjoying every second. It was infectious, and it showed in all of those that surrounded him. He was a terrific role model and a great leader, and was invaluable in shaping the lives and minds of the many generations that he dedicated his life teaching. Rich instilled pride and inspiration in everyone he met. There are a very few people you cross paths with in your lifetime whom you remember so vividly and regard so highly; Coach Rich Renn is that someone to so many. He will be missed

Dear Pam and Children, Jerry and I,of course, were as shocked as were so many others to learn of Rich's sudden death. It is so hard to believe that our friend with such a zest for life is actually gone. Our deepest sympathy goes out to all of you. His vibrant love of life will always be remembered by those who even knew him casually. I will always remember our ski trips together. A special memory will be of the Valpo's group trip to our home in Southern Indiana. Somehow I think that Heaven has a new Social Director planning the next days agenda. He will be sadly missed but always remain close to our hearts. You and your family will remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Renn Family, I just want to share my deepest thoughts and prayers for your family. Coach Renn had a huge impact on my life, like most teachers and coaches he always motivated me and my fellow peers to do the very best in the class room and on the field. To the Renn Family: Words cannot serve justice for the sorrow that we feel for the loss that your family has suffered so suddenly. Having worked with Rich everyday for the past 20 years, I can tell you that there was rarely a day where Rich did not say at least something about each one of you. His love for his family and all of the students and athletes that have come across his path over these many years is immeasureable. Know that you will be in our prayers. God Bless

When I heard about Rich Renn??s passing I thought about my experiences with him through football and in the classroom. I can recall one specific situation, in the middle of football practice, where he pulled me aside and gave me one of the most influential pep talks of my life. Also, one of the loudest! I look back at that day and realized that he helped me become who I am today. He motivated me to work harder and to never give up. I was very saddened to hear of his passing but I know that his teachings and influences will live on through people like me. I??ll never forget what I learned from him and I know that I??ll pass those lessons on to my children. Thanks Coach Renn! Alex Samardzich VHS Class of 1995

Dear Renn Family: Although it hasn't been football season for me for some time, I still think about Rich Renn every year as the leaves turn, the air cools, and the sun sets earlier. My dad used to tell me stories about his high school football coach, the to me, at least legendary Brother Donnelly. Well, my kids will be hearing stories about Rich Renn. He was a huge influence on me and many others. My deepest sympathies.

I will miss Rich. I will miss his laugh and the fun we had when he was around. I will always remember the famous floor hockey games when we taught together at Lake Station. We were always on different teams and he was always so competitive. He just made the games like playing for the Stanley Cup. I will also never forget the time he had his geography class dig up my field hockey field to make the largest map of the United States-complete with rivers and buildings. It was hard to to roll the hockey ball after that. There will never be another Rich. God blessed us for the many good years we had with him. My condolences to Pam and the family.

Dearest Renn Family, I remember many things about Coach Renn !! I remember not being eligible for fall sports and then I remember this guy, very intense, very passionate man who cared about me and my future. He cared so much , I was told Craig, if you are not eligible for track in spring you will run for me everyday in gym class from bell to bell. That's motivation. I wondered, who is this guy........I am not wondering anymore!! He told me so many times to be a punter but be the best punter you can be!!! I know that is all he wanted for all of us!! Be what you want to be, but be the best!! Love you Coach!! I hope all of us can have the same passion in our lives that will touch another human being the way you have touched all of us Vikings!!! I want to offer my condolences to Coach Renn's family. He coached me at East Gary Edison in football and wrestling. He was a fiery coach who inspired me deeply to play to my best ability. I was wrestling heavyweight against Chesterton high school in Chesterton...the guy I was wrestling complained to the ref about a shirt I was wearing under my uniform top...they stopped the match and made me go and take it off..Coach Renn went with me,,he said Skarja there making you take off your good luck shirt...I want you to go out and kick that guys.....a_ _!!! I went out and pinned this guy and we won the match...Coach Renn came out on the mat jumping up and down...said see Skarja no one messes with your good luck charm I am sorry I can not be at the visitation as I am sick and unable to travel. Coach is in my thoughts and always will be...I will truly miss him. Sincerely, Michael Skarja
Rick Jolliff left a message on September 15, 2008:
Dear Renn Family, Rich was one of our local heros. He was a great competitor. I know, I played against him many years ago in what was then one of the most anticipated games in high school. Wirt and Merrillville were both 9-0 playing for the Calumet Championship. On that cold and rainy evening Rich, Jerry Perkins, Canales etc and company preceeded to kick our butts 34-0. Years later at our MHS class reunion I was on the microphone and I heckled my classmates to play Wirt one more time .....a big yell and applause came up until our coach asked to say a few words. He mentioned Rich and Jerry and said playing Wirt ONCE was enough. A few years ago , my wife and I had the good pleasure of being seated at the same table as Rich and Pam at a New Years Eve Party at the Porter County Expo Center. It was truly a nice evening reminicing sp and getting to know one another. Our sincere condolences to your family. Rick and Cheri Jolliff Valparaiso, IN rickjolliff@21alliance.com
