Norman L. Smith, age 63, of Michigan City, died Tuesday, July 21 at St. Anthony Memorial Health Care Center. Services will be held Monday, July 27 at 1:30 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Sunday, July 26 from 3 to 6 p.m. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City, with full military services by VFW Post # 2536 & American Legion Post # 451. Norman was born Sept. 21, 1945 in Michigan City to Norman L.C. and Dorothy (Hibner) Smith, his mother survives in Michigan City. On August 19, 1966 in Michigan City, he married Sherry Heiser, she survives in Michigan City.
Also surviving are his sons Christopher (fiancé Jackie Grayam) Smith of Michigan City and Kevin (Melissa) Smith,Grafenwoehr, Germany, grandchildren, Madelaine Smith, Kaila and Kodiak Grayam, brother-in-law Daryl (Linda) Heiser of Franklin, IN, mother-in-law Beatrice Heiser of Michigan City, nephew Eric Heiser and niece Jennifer Heiser, both of Franklin, IN; special pet Bailey, and many friends including Ray, Dave and Charlene. He was preceded in death by father, Norman L.C. Smith, and his sister Sandy Smith.
He was a graduate of Elston Class of “64”. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. He was a chemical analyst with Bethlehem Steel, retiring in 2004 after 36 years of service. He then worked at Coolspring Car Wash “Spot Not” for several years until he became ill.
He enjoyed cooking and eating, fishing, golfing and camping. He especially enjoyed animals. He was known as “Norman the Toolman” by many who knew him. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
