Michael R. McCarty, age 66, of Chesterton, died Monday, March 15 at St. Anthony Memorial Health Care surrounded by his Family. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 23 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ann of the Dunes Church, Beverly Shores. Michael was born August 10, 1943 in LaPorte to Robert L. and Mary Jane (Schumaker) McCarty, both of whom preceded him in death. On August 15, 1988 in Michigan City, he married Gloria J. Panozzo, she died in 1995. Surviving is his daughter Michelle S. Mellen of Michigan City, son Christopher M.( Fiancé Tracy) McCarty of Chesterton, and daughter Amy H. McCarty of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, grandchildren Richard Houck III, Troy M. Houck, Andrew C. McCarty, Blake McCarty, Alex & Claire Mellen, Mathew Switzer and Lajos Gazdag, sister Kathi (Kingsley) Miner of Cullowee, NC and nephews Matthew and Michael Miner. Michael was a vice president with Euclid Machine in East Chicago, retiring in 2006. He had spent twenty three years as a buyer with Bethlehem Steel. He enjoyed boating, especially sailing, and was a professional water skier. He was also very proud of his Irish heritage, and also a member of the NRA. To those who knew him, he was a strong, witty, and generous man. To those who knew him well, he was a leader, a person you could always go to for help or advice and an ever forgiving friend that always had your back no matter what the situation. To his family, he was everything; a loving father, the figure of pure strength for all of us, and the guy you wanted to have as a “phone a friend” if you ever made it to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. He offered so much to anyone that he met that you were certain to be touched by his friendship. He gave all to his children and family alike, he prided himself as a leader of the “Irish Jihad” and he had enough arsenal to make it real! He considered himself to be “Captain America” and had he not grown old would of stayed that guy. He was definitely the Matriarch for all of us, and will be missed very dearly. To sum it up folks, he was a bad dude. We love you dad. Erin Go Bragh Memorial contributions may be made to Michiana Humane Society.
