Maynard Louis Gergely, Sr.

June 27, 1923 - June 15, 2009

Maynard Louis Lou Gergely, Sr., age 85, of Crown Point, IN, passed away on Monday, June 15, 2009 at Wittenberg Lutheran Village in Crown Point, IN. He is survived by his wife, Theresa Terry of 59 years, children, Lou Jr. Marla Gergely, Dale Tina Gergely, Glenn Susan Gergely, Cheryl Ed Siminski, and Tim Susan Gergely, grandchildren, Lindsey, Wesley Mieka, Jolene Justin Greenhaugh, Nicholas Jenny, Ryan Jenni, Jason, Bryce, Kimberly, Scott Kelly, Chad, Kacey, and Alex, great-grandchildren, Jordan Siminski, Addison Siminski, Ella Greenhaugh, and Lela Gergely. He is preceded in death by his parents, Maynard and Elisabeth, son, David, and sisters, Betty Gard and Lois Mako. Funeral prayers will be said on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at 9:30 AM at Geisen Funeral-Cremation & Reception Centre NOTE: NEW LOCATION-2 blocks east of Broadway at 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 321 E. Joliet St., Crown Point, IN, with Fr. Pat Kalich officiating. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery in Crown Point, IN. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Geisen Funeral-Cremation & Reception Centre from 2:00 to 5:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Lou was employed at Sears Roebuck for 35 years as a serviceman and service department manager. He was a World War II veteran participating in the 101st Calvary Squadron Reconnaissance in Europe. He was also a Boy Scout leader and worked with the Civil Defense. Lou was an avid woodcarver which brought him many years of joy. He belonged to the Duneland Woodcarvers, South Suburban Chislers, and Caloosa Wood Carvers in Ft. Meyers, FL. He also taught woodcarving in Bonita Springs, FL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the David Gergely Scholarship Fund in the name of Lou Gergely. We fondly remember the fun times we had together at Shady Acres Park in the early 2000's. The two of you were always so friendly, helpful and fun to be with. Those memories will last a lifetime.

Dearest Terry & Cheryl & other family, Many long years ago, I interviewed Maynard for the Post-Tribune. Cheryl participated in Sing Out, Crown Point with our kids. And, Terry, you sit right behind our family at 7:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. We have a special place in our hearts for the Gergely family. We feel your sorrow. God bless you all.

We did not get a chance to know Lou for very long but he definitely touched all of us. I have two favorite stories. Most days when the weather was nice Lou would come out on his scooter and stop by to chat. He would often say he was out for his daily jog or he would challenge the boys to a race....scooter vs. go-cart. They all got such a kick out of him! Earlier this spring I cleaned out the garage and threw out a ton of stuff I thought was junk. One weekend David was working in the yard with a big tractor excavating the corner of the lot. Lou was out supervising when David ran over our brand new large landscaping rake mangling the aluminum handle. I didn't even notice Lou picking it up until a bit later when her returned with the the new and improved rake. He informed me he fixed it with one of the wooden rods that I had thrown out the week before. It truly made me smile. I hope you all are coping and hanging on to each other. The Walden Family

I will always remember Lou as a kind and talented man. One of his carvings sits on my computer desk so I think of him often. My love to Terry and the family.
