Jane Kelley Sheeran, age 93, of Hobart, IN, formerly of Merrillville, IN passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024.
Jane is survived by her four children: Mary, Timothy (Sharon Smith), Anne (Dan Zucker) and Becky; three grandchildren: Kathleen Sheeran, Michael Sheeran and Jesse Sheeran; sister, Margaret Balducci; sister-in-law, Patricia Kelley; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James E. Sheeran, Jr.; son, Christopher J. Sheeran; brothers: Rev. Donald Kelley, Robert Kelley, and Joseph Kelley, and sister, Ann Kelley. She has been a member of the St. Peter and Paul parish community since 1955.
Jane was born on September 23, 1930, in the farming community of Merna, IL to James and Mary Kinsella Kelley. She attended Ballard Grade School, a one-room schoolhouse, sometimes commuting by horse and buggy. Jane graduated from Trinity High School in Bloomington, IL and went on to study social work at Rosary College in River Forest, IL. After graduating in 1952, Jane became a social worker at Loretto Hospital in the west suburbs of Chicago.
Jane and Jim met during their college years and married in 1953. They later moved to Gary, IN and began their family. A lifelong Democrat, Jane was vitally interested in politics. She read voraciously with special interests in WWII and US History. She had a love of opera and frequented the Chicago Symphony. When she resumed her career in social work, Jane spent 22 fulfilling years with the Lake County Public Welfare Department. Her love of travel and history took Jane and family members on many trips through Europe and North America.
Friends may visit with the family on Friday, April 5, 2024 at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, 8303 Taft St., Merrillville, IN 46410, from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM.
Burial will take place on Saturday, April 6th, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Holy Cross Cemetery, Merna IL.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Jane’s name to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.
