Mary Leathers, age 92, of Cedar Lake, IN, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 15, 2024.
Mary is survived by her son, Thomas (Katherine) Leathers; grandchildren: Daniel, Brian (Dawn), Michael, Steven (Macie), John, Sean (Misty), Chad, and Kaitlin Leathers, Beth Ann Fabugais, Jeffrey (Tracy) Beck, Jessica (Doug) Fortner, and Shannon (Tim) Hurst; and great-grandchildren: Colton, Ethan, Blair, Abigail, Mason, Freya, Oliver, Lilianna, Morgan, and Connor.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Leathers Sr.; her children: Karen Beck, John Leathers Jr., Charles Leathers; parents: Joseph and Herbertine O’Dea; brothers: Frank O’Dea, Joseph O’Dea; sisters: Margaret Engle, Theresa Mang.
Family meant everything to Mary, and she loved every aspect of being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. She loved summertime gardening, having cookouts at the pool, hosting Holiday parties, and celebrating her Irish heritage in her annual St. Patrick’s Day party.
Mary worked as the secretary at MacArthur Elementary School. She said that all of the kids would come to her when they needed something, or had a problem- so she got to be a “school Mom” to all of those kids every year. She worked there for 22 years and loved it.
She especially enjoyed helping others and eagerly engaged in numerous projects through church and community, including crocheting sleeping mats (from plastic bags) for the homeless, and sewing personal items to be shipped to underprivileged girls in Africa.
She loved her many opportunities to travel, both throughout the United States, and abroad (Ireland of course, Germany, Korea, and others).
Mary will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. God now holds her in the palm of his Hand, until our Irish eyes meet again.
