MARY ELLEN GAWOR of Crown Point passed away Friday, June 24th. She was born in Vincennes, IN to Elmer and Lillian Howerton (nee Potts) on April 13, 1925. She graduated from Merrillville High School in 1943, and then lived in Gary, Merrillville and Crown Point. She worked at US Steel as a tube inspector during WW II, and met the love of her life Joseph Charles Gawor whom she was married to for 58 loving years.
She is survived by four children: Jo Ellen Jackson (Gene Groves); Karen Haworth; Mary-Lynn (Dr.Lloyd) France, and Joseph (Karen) Gawor. Five grandchildren: Kevin (Tricia) Haworth; Nathan and Forrest France; Katie Gawor and Joseph Gawor III. Two great grandchildren: Hailey and Clara Ellen Haworth and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph, brother David Howerton and parents Elmer and Lillian Howerton. She was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church of Crown Point, a former member of St. Andrew the Apostle Church and St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary Post 454 New Chicago, IN, and the American Rosie the Riveter Association. She was retired from General Cinema and Carson Pierre Scott.
Friends and Family may call at Pruzin & Little Funeral Service, 811 East Franciscan Drive, Crown Point, IN on June 30 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Final viewing one hour prior to mass on Friday, July 1 at St Anthony’s Chapel, Crown Point at 10:30 with mass following at 11:30. Fr. Terrence Bennis will be officiating followed by burial at Calumet Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Franciscan Communities Hospice.
