Leroy Martin Earl Kohne, age 81, of Hebron, IN, formerly of Duluth, MN, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 after a long struggle with multiple myeloma. He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Dorothy of Hebron, one daughter: Diane Schuster of Chicago, IL; two sons: Martin Colleen of Apple Valley, MN and Peter Janice of Rensselaer, IN, and many nieces and nephews. Leroy was preceded in death by his parents: Leroy & Margaret McCloskey; brothers: T. John & Joseph Kohne and sisters: Katherine Wistein, Mary Lou Roed, Lorraine Wild, and Helen Tarnowski. Leroy was a graduate of Denfield High School and attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He served in the U.S. Navy. On June 17, 1950 he married Dorothy M. Anderson. He was a dairy farmer of 5 years prior to working for U.S. Steel in Duluth. He was active in the Duluth Boy Scouts, Community Club, Youth Hockey, and as a city councilman for 5 years. He also served as a delegate for the Republican party and was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church. In 1973 Leroy was transferred by U.S. Steel to the Gary, IN mill. In 1984 he retired and then worked for Patz's Grocery and Northcoast Beverage. A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, June 11, 2010 at 7:00 PM at St. Helen's Catholic Church, 302 N. Madison St., Hebron, IN, with Fr. Derrick Dudash officiating. Services will conclude at the funeral home. Friends may visit with the family at St. Helen's Catholic Church on Friday, June 11, 2010 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. A private inurnment will be in the family plot at Oneota Cemetery in Duluth, MN at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to St. Helen's Catholic Church or Call-A-Ride, 195 Boardwalk, Hebron, IN 46341.
