Leland E. Bowlby, age 84, of Michigan City, died Saturday, February 21, 2009 at St. Anthony Memorial Health Care, Michigan City. Funeral services will be held Wednesday February 25, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ with Rev. William H. Fine officiating. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home, with VFW Post #2536 and American Legion Post 451 memorial service at 7 p.m. Burial of ashes will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City, at a later date. Mr. Bowlby was born August 8, 1924 in Rossville, IL to Howard L. and Olive (Ervin) Bowlby, both of whom preceded him in death. On June 8, 1946 in Michigan City, he married Betty Gubbine, who survives in Michigan City. Also surviving are daughter Linda (Richard) Mrkva of LaPorte, sons James Bowlby of Michigan City, and Darin (Melissa) Bowlby of Mooresville, IN; 4 granddaughters and 4 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. One brother and 2 sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Bowlby had been a working foreman at Hays Corp./Milton Roy for 40 years until his retirement in 1986. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WWII. He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, life member of VFW Post #2536, the 11th Airborne Association, American Legion Skwiat Post #451 and the Michigan City Senior Center.
