Karen S. Mamelson

July 11, 1951 - August 31, 2009

Karen S. Mamelson, age 58, of Crown Point, IN, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2009 at her home after a short battle with cancer. She is survived by her son, Eric; mother, Lorna Mamelson of Valparaiso, IN; 2 brothers, Paul Mamelson of Elkhart, IN and Craig Cheryl Mamelson of Georgia; 2 nieces, Stephanie and Kelly; aunt, Evelyn Wilde of Portage, IN, and many cousins and dear friends. She is preceded in death by her son, Jason Rodrick; father, William Mamelson, and grandparents, Louis and Elizabeth Simonson and Despina and Thomas Mamelson. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 4, 2009 at 10:00 AM at Geisen Funeral-Cremation & Reception Centre NOTE: NEW LOCATION-2 blocks east of Broadway at 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN, with Chaplain Shirley Short, MDiv. officiating. Interment at Calvary Cemetery in Portage, IN. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at Geisen Funeral-Cremation & Reception Centre from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. Karen is retired from St. Anthony Hospital and also worked for St. Anthony Hospice. Memorials may be given to St. Anthony Hospice. I worked with Karen for many years at St. Anthony's. She was a lovely person with a great sense of humor. My condolences to her family and especially her son, Eric, whom she was so proud of and loved so much. She always beamed from ear to ear when she spoke of him. My prayers are with you.

Karen was my good and loving friend that I've known for 44 years. When I think of Karen I remember her bravery in hard times and her sense of humor. But mostly I remember the good times we had in high school, and in our young married lives. Playing cards till 3:00 am with the kids asleep in the playpen, our annual fancy holiday dinner, where we would dress to the nines,and eat at my old formica table. The guys had to wear ties, much to their chagrin. Our forays into Chicago to Christmas shop at Marshall Fields, and sneaky fun we had in high school! I never got to know Eric, but I do know that Karen loved him with her heart and soul, and she had a big non-judgemental heart, something I aspire to. I will miss her immensely. My heart goes out to her family who was so supportive of her.

As a member of the Wirt Class of 1969 Reunion Committee, we send our sympathy to Karen's family. We tried to contact her about our class reunion as we all had fond memories of her. We are saddened about her passing and we want you to know that she was missed.

Karen was a gracious and loving person. Our condolences to her family.

Karen was a loving mother to my student Eric. She did her best to make sure he received all the help he needed in getting a good education. The family will remain in my thoughts and prayers.
