Joseph Garritano

December 6, 1956 - September 17, 2009

Joseph Garritano, age 52 of Portage, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2009. He is survived by his father, Norman Garritano of Union Mills, IN; sister, Nora James Zale of Las Vegas, NV; 2 brothers: D'Andrea Susan Garritano of Union Mills, IN and Ross Garritano of Valparaiso, IN, and many nieces & nephews. Preceded in death by mother, Irene Garritano; sister, Rosemary Garritano; and brother, David Garritano. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 21, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Geisen Funeral Home, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, with Pastor Allen Shepherd officiating. Interment to follow at Ridgelawn-Mt. Mercy Cemetery, Gary, IN. Friends may visit with the family Sunday, September 20th from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Joe was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School and a member of Sons of the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He worked as a welder at U.S. Steel Gary Works with 29 years of service. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing and most of all spending time with his family. He was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend and will be missed by all who knew him. I just want to send my condolences to the Garritano family. Joe and I worked in the Coke Plant for many years. I was a welder too. He was always very kind and thoughtful. Again I am sorry for your loss. Terry & Valerie Judge

Mr. Garritano and family , It has been many years since our families were neighbors, but some of my fondest memories of childhood were of times spent with your family. Although I did not know Joe personally, I have the greatest respect and love for his father Norm who I have known for many years and who I am privileged to be a Kiwanian with in Merrillville. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this very trying time.

In memory of Joey, a wonderfully giving, kind soul who helped so many people. My fondest memory is gathering at Sue and D's house every Christmas for a wild and energetic game of Nertz. This was a shock to see in the paper, I haven't seen Joe since the mid 1990's when I knew him well. Remember going to out to D'Andre and Sue's house with him...remember how generous and kind Joe was. Your family has my deepest sympathies. May he now be at rest in peace and in eternal joy.
