Carolyn Saylor Russell left a message on April 22, 2009:
My sincere condolences to the family of Dr. Birdzell. As a child he was my families Dr. and I remember him so kindly. My father is Mr. Leonard M Saylor who was a teacher in Crown Point for many years and he remembers the Birdzell children. Dr. Birdzell was a wonderful man and I can remember him making house calls several times when I was a child. I am certain he will be sorely missed, greatly admired and tenderly remembered now and always. Sincerly, Carolyn Saylor Russell and Leonard Saylor csr3038@bellsouth.net

Dr. Birdzell was our family doctor from 1947 until his retirement. My husband, Al, and I had seven children. Dr. Birdzell delivered six of these babies at the former Gary Mercy hospital. In fact, our youngest son, Christopher John, was named for him. Doc saw our family through many health problems. He was one of the few doctors who, early in his career, would come to our house when needed. His quiet kindness and wisdom will be missed.

He was a very professional physician who practiced for years without a local hospital. He was very interested in any effort to improve the medical care for the citizens of Crown Point. He was never too busy to listen to the problems of the younger physicians.

My brother Jerry sent me the article about your Dad. Just wanted you to know how much he was admired by me and our whole family. My first memory of him was when he sewed up my forehead when I fell off the monkey bars in kindergarten. Of course we made occasional visits to his office and him to our home when we all had measles one time. I also remember my dad buying the train set and then him buying it back years later for his grandsons. I also recall how he loved to take his boat out on Lake Michigan. I will print this out and show it to my parents who are now in assisted living here in Mt. Dora. You are fortunate to have had him in your lives for so many years. Enjoy the memories!
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

Im sorry to hear of your dads passing. Ive always thought he did a superb job in caring for my dad. As we were moving my Mother out of her house many years ago he stopped to say hello. It was so good to see him. I said I was getting olded & he hadentchanged a bit. With a big smile he said THATS THE WAY ITS SUPPOSED TO BE.

Dr. James Gentleman left a message on March 5, 2009:
My sincerest sympathy goes to the Birdzell Family on the passing of one our finest physicians. I was one of his many patients as was my grandmother, mother and father who called Dr. Birdzell their family doctor. It was his compassion for his patients and profession that inspired me to also become a family doctor. Dr. Birdzell will be fondly remembered by his patients and colleagues. Sincerely, Dr. James Gentleman, D.O.
Mike Curless left a message on March 5, 2009:
Dear Birdzell/Cumming Family, We were sorry to hear the news about Dr. Birdzell. I was lucky to be around him a few times mostly in Northern Michigan at his farm and the Cumming's lake house which was always fun. I know he was a big fan of that part of the state. He was always very engaging and interesting to talk to. I knew he had a very full life but was amazed at all of his accomplishments I just read about. There hasn't been 20,000 house calls total made in ALL of Indiana since he retired! What a great guy and life he had. With deepest sympathy from the Curless family.

We are blessed by the many contributions Dr Birdzell gave us in his life. And in his death we can remember that it was Dr Birdzell who was the inspiration for the Crown Point Community Foundation. Future generations of Crown Pointers will continue to be served by his very good work. Thank you, Dr Birdzell.
