John P. Hortyk, age 84, of Crown Point, IN, passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point, IN. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; 4 daughters, Karen Rick Armbrust of Brookfield, WI, Kim Jay Hill of Franklin, TN, Judith Mike Brandt of Charleston, SC, and Janet Stacy Burton Hortyk of Queens Creek, AZ; 5 grandchildren, Shawn Tim, Rick Sheila, Katie, Evan, and C.J.; 1 great-granddaughter, Brenna, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul & Mary Hortyk, and 3 sisters, Helen Puzas, Mary Jacobs, and Madeline Karney. Funeral prayers will be said on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 9:15 AM at Geisen Funeral-Cremation & Reception Centre, NOTE: NEW LOCATION- 2 blocks east of Broadway at 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 321 E. Joliet St., Crown Point, IN with Fr. Dennet Jung officiating. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery in Crown Point, IN. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, January 22, 2010 from 2:00 to 5:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 PM with an American Legion service at 7:00 PM at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre. John was born in Gary, IN on March 8, 1925 and attended Tolleston High School. He was a proud veteran of the Army Corps of Engineers, serving in World War II, a member of the American Legion Fred Schmidt Post #20 in Crown Point, IN, and was employed by the National Tea Company and Luke's Market Basket for over 40 years. John was affectionately known to all as “Uncle Johnny” or “Big Daddy”. John's family at Squaw Valley will be missing it's “Chief”.
