John B. Gertz, age, 79 of Merrillville, IN passed away on Sunday, June 6, 2010. John is survived by his wife, Aida; 4 children: John J. Dawn Gertz, Merrillville, Ann Cab Dixon, Crown Point, David Nikki Gertz, Hebron, Mark Gertz, Chicago, IL; sister, Clara Coppinger; grandchildren: Tiffany and Dustin Gertz, Kirsten, Jessica, Samuel, Morgan, Benjamin Dixon, Matthew and Daniel Gertz, and Chloe Purchla-Gertz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Timothea and John Gertz; brother, Donald Gertz. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 14, 2010 at 10:00 AM directly at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 801 W. 73rd Avenue, Merrillville, IN with Rev. Lawrence Heeg officiating. Interment to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Friends may visit with the family at Geisen Funeral Home, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, IN on Sunday, June 13, 2010 from 12:00 Noon to 6:00 PM and on Monday morning directly at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of Mass at 10:00 AM. A prayer service will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday at the funeral home. John was retired from Dixie Dairy. He was a member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church. John was an U.S. Army veteran and served in the Korean War. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to St. Anthony Hospice, 203 Franciscan Dr., Crown Point, IN 46307. Ich erinnere mich oft an die schnen Stunden mit Jack und wnsche Euch von Herzen alles Gute fr die Zukunft, auch im Namen meiner Schwester und Brder. Klrchen, Hans, Josef und ich haben Messen in den nchsten Wochen in der katholischen Pfarrgemeinde St. Antonius in Herten und im Kapuzinerkloster Luzern bestellt. Holy Masses will be held in the next weeks at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Herten and in the Cappuchin Monastery of Luzern, Switzerland. with Love, Josefine Gertz, Klara Dunkel with brothers and families.

Ein herzensguter Mensch, mit dem wir so viele schoene Stunden in Deutschland und in Amerika erleben durften. Wir erinnern uns ganz besonders an den Sonnenuntergang am Michigan-See, als Jacki in den Sand schrieb, Es ist sehr gemuetlich und wir schrieben: Es war sehr schoen mit Dir, Jacki, Danke! John always waved as he drove by. He was such a nice man. My prayers are with you.

Our prayers are with the Gertz family. Whenever I saw John he had a smile on his face and words of encouragement to all that crossed his path. He will be greatly missed, but will be a great asset to the Lord in heaven.
