James M. Huse, age 94, of Valparaiso, IN, passed away at 7:44 PM on the 5th of October at Clairebridge Village in Valparaiso, IN. He attended Lew Wallace High School where he met his future wife, Katherine Yuill. He worked for the old Railway Express Agency along the B&O right of way in Gary, IN prior to the Second World War. He served with the Army Air Corps in Europe until the end of hostilities and then remained active for several years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Most of his life was spent working and living in the Calumet Region, his parents among the first to settle in Gary in 1906. He spent time with his own building and remodeling business before working for various glass contracting firms as a sales rep. estimator and did layout and design work. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, as well as the Explorer Scouts as both member and later as Scout Master. A charter member of 43rd Avenue Presbyterian Church, he and Katherine were active as sponsors for youth activities for many years. His hobby of scuba diving, taken up during the fifties, later led to volunteer work with the Civil Defense and recovery of drowning victims. Other activities included past president of the Hobart YMCA Board of Directors, and the Merrillville PTA. He was gifted with his hands. Following retirement he spent time working with wood, building beautifully crafted and much cherished clocks for friends and family. During this time, he and Katherine were fortunate traveling throughout the U.S., Europe and the Middle East. In short, he enjoyed a full life. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Charles Una Smith Huse, brother, Robert W. Shirley Huse and sister, Eleanor Jean Huse. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Katherine NMI Huse, his son, Robert J. Huse and wife Linda M. Huse, as well as grandchildren; Shannon Jose Limon, Charlotte John Ontto, Joshua Nicole Hrapek, Elizabeth Hrapek, Joseph Hrapek, Rachel Michael Perry and six great-grandchildren. In fulfillment of James and Katherine's request, funeral services will be private. Interment of remains will take place at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville, IN.
