HELEN S. AKLAND, age 101, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2016, in the home of her daughter, Nancy, and son-in-law, John Goodwin. She had resided there for eight years and died peacefully in her room under the excellent care of Franciscan Hospice.
Helen was born in Kingston, NY on January 8, 1915 to Hiley and Helen (nee Clements) Armer. After her father died in the 1918 influenza epidemic, she and her mother moved back to her mother’s childhood home, 47 McMaster St. in Ballston Spa, NY. She grew up there with her grandmother, Nancy Clements and her aunt, Jane Clements. Her grave site is in Ballston Spa.
Helen is survived by her five children: Constance (late Dana) Platt, Robert (Carolyn) Akland, Nancy (John) Goodwin, Marilyn (Terry) Jemison, Jane (late Keith) Palmatier; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter. Preceded in death by her husband, Rev. T. Howard Akland; granddaughter, Rachelle L. Goodwin-McClory; parents, grandparents, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Helen was a teacher and after her marriage in 1941, was very busy as the minister’s wife and raising her five children. There were many moves, having to meet new people and friends, while carrying out her roles. She was loving, kind and joyful, especially with her family and friends. She was a wonderful role model and a good cook. Helen took great pleasure in listening and advising. She remained involved, celebrating her 100th birthday last year and her 101st this year. Helen’s hobbies included bird watching, knitting, sewing, reading, puzzles, watching the news, PBS, and visiting with family and friends. All of us lost a true treasure who left us with many loving memories.
There will be no public services. The family will celebrate her life at home with a graveside service in Ballston Spa, New York at a later date. Memorials may be made to Franciscan Hospice.
