Helen Mary Lesniak (nee Nowak), age 68, of Merrillville, IN, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2024 at Munster Community Hospital.

Helen is survived by her husband, James Lesniak; sons: James (Ethan Pullman) Lesniak II and Matthew (Valerie) Lesniak; daughter, Julie (Dann) Barrett; four grandchildren: Olivia and Luke Lesniak and Aubrey and Shelby Barrett; brothers: Alex, Henry, Ed, Jim, Ron, and Don Nowak; and her sisters: Mary Nowak, Marcy (Todd) Loessin, and Angie Gruling.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents: Alex and Mary Nowak; brother, John Nowak; and sisters-in-laws: Cheryl and Tina Nowak.

Helen was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church and was a religious education teacher. She retired from Kmart and also worked at Meijer. Helen belonged to the Jaycettes where she held the positions of President, Vice-President, and State Director. She enjoyed traveling. Helen’s pride and joy were her children and grandchildren.

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 1 E. Wilhelm St., Schererville, IN 46375. Additional visitation will be held at the Church a half hour prior. Interment to follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Helen’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the American Heart Association.

For many years, I worked with Helen at Kmart Cooperation. What a talented and wonderful person. My sincerest condolences to her family.

I loved running into Helen occasionally. She was so pretty and sweet. Our kids went to school together & she always asked about each of them when I saw her. She adored her husband and family - epitome of a perfect mom. I will always admire her. My sincerest condolences to the family - such a big loss for anyone who knew her. RIP sweet Helen.

My condolences to the Lesniak family. I did not meet Helen in life, but her daughter is my co-worker at Butler University. Julie Barret’s kindness and authenticity tell me who Helen is, and we thank God for her life.
