Helen E. Drehmel, age 83, Long Beach, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 16, at St. Anthony Memorial Health Care Center, Michigan City. Cremation has taken place and she will be buried at Swan Lake Cemetery. There is no viewing or service. A private memorial reception will be held for close friends and family at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 at the Elks Lodge in Michigan City. Helen was born October 19, 1925 in Michigan City to the late Edward and Florence (Haller) Keleher. She attended Long Beach School, graduated from Elston High School and received a Bachelor’s degree from Northwest University. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. On August 28, 1948, in Michigan City, she married Drexel Keith Drehmel whom preceded her in death. Surviving is her daughter Diedre Kutscher of Allegan, MI; son Dan (Diana) Drehmel of Indianapolis; grandchildren Nicole and Jenna Kutscher; brother-in-law Robert W. Lutz of Long Beach; sister-in-law Anita Drehmel of South Bend, three nieces, Diane (Mike) Jones, Millie Drehmel and Debbie Campbell; and four nephews, Douglas (Susan) Drehmel, William L. Drehmel III, John Keleher Jr., and Robert Keleher. She was preceded in death by her sister Marjorie A. Lutz who died September 1, 2009, brother John Keleher Sr., and brother-in-law William L. Drehmel Jr. who died July 29, 2009. Helen was an avid tennis player and “all sports” fan. She especially enjoyed growing up in Long Beach and the natural beauty of the lakeshore. She cherished all the friendships she had made through Sullair, tennis, bridge clubs, childhood, school, and her community Service League involvement. She and her husband had a zest for life and her tenacious spirit and love will be fondly missed. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Michiana Humane Society.
