Harold A. Sharkey, age 88, of Michigan City, died Saturday April 10, 2010 at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital with his family at his bedside during his lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. The Rev. Kevin Patterson of First Baptist Church will officiate. Burial of his ashes will take place at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens at a later date. Mr. Sharkey was born January 28, 1922 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of Alexander and Agnes (Rector) Sharkey He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Sharkey. They were married on November 14, 1943 in Michigan City. He is also survived by his daughter, Susan (Bruce DDS) Blackburn, D.D.S. of Kokomo, IN; brother Ralph (Marilyn) Sharkey of Michigan City; nephews Roger (Kim) and David (Sharon) Sharkey, and niece Michelle Sharkey Rosenow; sister, Dolores (Randy) Haney of Rolling Prairie, IN; brother in law and sister in law-John (Norma) Poehl of Michigan City; nephews, Timothy (Susan) Poehl and Mark (Beth) Poehl both of Michigan City, and nieces, Kimberly (Michael) Abbey of Carmel, IN. He was preceded in death by his brother John Sharkey and beloved aunt Ellen Trojan. Mr. Sharkey retired from Milton Roy Hays Republic Division after 37 years of service as an electrical engineer. Mr. Sharkey served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was at the invasion of Sicily. He served as chairman of the trustee and deacon boards at First Baptist Church of Michigan City. Mr. Sharkey sang in the church choir, mixed quartet, men’s quartet and enjoyed playing the trumpet. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing and loved photography. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the First Baptist Church of Michigan City.
