Gregory D. Bernard

June 30, 1950 - October 11, 2009

Gregory D. Bernard, age 59, of LaPorte, died Sunday, October 11, 2009 at his residence in LaPorte. Services will be held Thursday, October 15 at 10:00 a.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home with Pastor Wayne Rosson officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Bernard was born June 30, 1950 in LaPorte to Arthur Bernard and Virginia (Dixon) Bernard Ambrose, both of whom preceded him in death. Surviving is his step-father James Ambrose of Michigan City, brother Roger (Jane) Bernard of LaPorte, sister Donna Maglio of Michigan City, niece Jennifer (Jeff) Bildhauser and nephew Chris (Danita) Bernard, both of LaPorte, and great nieces and nephews Jordyn, Madison, Trenton, Amira and Tucker, and special friend Carla Christensen of New Paris, IN, He was preceded in death by stepbrother Larry Ambrose and stepsister Brenda Patterson. Gregory had been employed at the Indiana State Prison as a tower guard for 20 years. Gregory was a master of electronic games. He was an avid NASCAR fan, and loved to read and fish. He was a loving and devoted brother, uncle & friend. Memorial contributions may be made to the LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter.

How sorry I was to hear of my friend Greg's passing. Greg and I lived together in the Pines in 1974 - and again in my house on Trunk Ct. in the early 80's. He was indeed a good friend - and a good man. I offer my condolences to Roger and the family at this time of loss. Greg was one of the good guys, and I certainly feel lucky for the friendship we shared.

I first met Officer Bernard when I started working at Indiana State Prison 3 yrs ago. Bernard relieved me in tower 4. I work the opposite night shift J group. And would chat a few minutes about what was going on or not at the prison and say have a good day. Last night I was assigned to tower 4, and I will miss seeing and talking with Officer Bernard. I know that he will greatly be missed. My thoughts are with the family. God Bless
