Gerald “Jerry” Cohen, age 76, of Michigan City, went to meet the Lord on Tuesday, November 24 at 12:10 a.m. at LaPorte Hospital. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 28 at 11:00 a.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home with Rev. David C. Hill officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service at the funeral home. The Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Assoc. will conduct a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Burial will in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City. Jerry was born December 18, 1932 in Chicago to Herbert A. and Leola B. (Cook) Cohen, both of whom preceded him in death. On July 15, 1952 in Cranston, RI, he married Lucille M. Blakey, his wife of 57 years, she survives in Michigan City. Also surviving are his sons Roy Allen (Jackie Lynn) Cohen of Michigan City, Earl Roger (Jill) Cohen of Dunedin, FL, daughter Cheryl Anne (David) Cunningham of Milwaukee, WI, 7 grandchildren, Neil, Sarah, Adam, Michael, Lindsey, Christa and Lauren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Jerry had worked for Clark Equipment and had his own business, Jerry’s Citgo Service, and also ran Superior Marine Service with his son Roy, while working for Michigan City Area Schools. In 1995, he started Golden Sandes Store and Lock with his son. He joined the Coolspring Township Fire Dept. in 1955 and served for 7 years, and has served as a volunteer with the Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Dept. since 1963. He was chaplain of the department and was state chaplain for the IVFA. He was a member of Springville Free Methodist Church, American Legion John Franklin Miller Post 37, and VFW Post 2536. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Memorial contributions may be made to Springfield Twp Volunteer Fire Dept. or Springville Free Methodist Church.
