I'm so sorry to learn of your loss. Mr. Hultgren was my high school chemistry teacher, and was one of my favorite teachers. Even though science was not my best subject, his comment in my final grade was "She will succeed in her chosen field". That support meant a great deal to me, and I've never forgotten it or him. Judi Hillmann, MC Rogers Class of '87

Deepest Sympathies on Your Loss- Mr. Hultgren was a fine and honest teacher, always treating students with respect and good humor. I learned a lot in his class and that knowledge was greatly appreciated when I got my undergraduate degree at Purdue several years later. How lucky he was to have lived a long and full life and have such a nice family. I hope you will celebrate his life and remember him with fond memories. Tom (and Becky) Stupeck
Linda K. (Wilson) Mills left a message on November 17, 2011:
I was saddened to hear of Mr. Hultgren's passing. In 1963-64, I use to attend his after school help sessions for H.S. Chem classes with a friend of mine, who was in his class. Since my friend and I walked home to the far westside together, he let me sit in with her on these sessions. They probably saved me from failing Chemistry. As a teacher with MCAS, I appreciate his time spent after school helping us. He was such a wonderful person as well as teacher. I have been so fortunate to have had so many teachers who were inducted into the MCAS Hall of Fame. I must say, my husband shares the joy of snowblowing our area and the neighbors, as well, with a John Deere Tractor. I had to smile at this.

Mr. Hultgren was such an amazing teacher when we had him, and such an inspiration to all of us who became teachers-in part-because of him. He got it. He got us! The world is a better place because of him.

As I read through the guestbook I see that many former students feel the same way as I do. He was a stickler for making you learn chemistry whether you wanted to or not. MCHS was definitely a better place because he was in it. He was one of a kind; and many, many students are better off knowing and learning from him. R.I.P. Mr. Hultgren. May Mr. Hultgren's family keep their memories of him close to their hearts as I will too.

Mr. Hultgren was a fantastic Junior Year Chemistry Teacher and a wonderful friend. I was also privileged to work with him during four years of selling snacks at lunch hours at the Elston High School Canteen. He provided wonderful leadership, lots of laughs, and an on-going spirit of atta-girl / you can do it! encouragement. He was a major motivational influence in my life during high school and beyond. May God give comfort to you, Mrs. Hultgren, and to you, his children, grandkids and great-grandkids. I trust that the memories of him will be felt in generations to come. Kathy, Elston Class of 1964

To the family of Mr. Hultgen: I still think of him as Mr., because he was my Chemistry teacher many years ago. He was my favorite! I spent many lunch hours in his classroom so I could get help if I needed it. He was never too busy to help a student. I even went back to see him after HS just to visit! I love you, George Hultgren You made me love Chemistry. From your Dairy Queen girl!
Kris Ferguson Ransom left a message on November 17, 2011:
Mr. Hultgren was my favorite teacher ever. I can honestly say that chemistry was very hard for me and I pretty much hated it. He called me "Fergie" and always picked on me, like calling on me over and over until I got an answer right. Somehow though he was so encouraging that I studied like crazy and wanted to do well to make him proud of me, which he was. He was the best! My sincere condolences to the Hultgren family and may God give you comfort and peace.
Duane Thomas left a message on November 17, 2011:

Maureen Egan Rice left a message on November 17, 2011:
Dear Hultgren Family: Though I went to Marquette, I got to know Mr. Hultgren through girls golf and what a gem he was! When he found out my mom was one of "his McMillan" girls he became my instant friend and mentor on the golf course! Never once did he not stop to ask about my score and how my game was going...and if I enjoyed science at that other school! It is because of Mr. Hultgren my brother Kevin found a love of science and became a doctor. My husband Jon always refers to him as "the best". Our community was better because of him. He was one of a kind...a very special kind! My prayers and thoughts are with you, Maureen Egan Rice

To the family: Mr. Hultren was one of the best teachers that I ever had, which I'm sure you hear often, but he was also a person who had a great influence on my career. He gave me the motivation and determination to make it into Veterinary school even though I did not think I was smart enough. Mr. Hultren was also a great man who loved people and wanted to see everyone succeed. He will be greatly missed but always rembered and the family should always remember how well he was thought of and respected. Sincerely, Dr.Rex Bailey and Shari (Jackson) Bailey

Mr Hultgren and Organic Chemistry, the two are synonymous. He truly had a gift for teaching and left an imprint on many lives. He was one of the greatest. Thank-you, dear teacher. Rest In Peace. Your former student of Rogers High, Class of 1976.
Pamela Zylstra left a message on November 16, 2011:
Mr. Hultgren enjoyed every minute of teaching chemistry...well almost every minute except when someone was blowing up his precious lab. He shared with us his love of science and his appreciation for how science helped us understand our world. I loved chemistry and Mr. Hultgren was to blame. Everyday he greeted us with a wide smile and booming welcome to his world of discovery; he made learning fun. He was also a card who enjoyed a good laugh even if it was at his expense. Generous with his encouragement and razor sharp criticism he gave of his time, talents and treasures to all his students. When I think of him my face breaks into a smile. Often over the many years since his classroom I have talked about him and reminisced about his class. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us. Farewell to an everyday hero! Fondly, Pamela Zylstra (chemistry 1969-70).

Not only was George my best Chem teacher and golf coach in the early 80's, but a great mentor. My life would not be the same if not for his dedication. He understood the blessing of a close relationship with God and now walks with Him. Mrs. H, I am praying perfect peace for you and your children.

Mr. Hultgren was one of the greatest teachers I ever had the privilege to learn from. I miss his leadership and guidance. Though I hadn't seen him in 25 years, every now and again, something he taught me would rise from within and I would think about him fondly and I continue to do so today. I am sorry for your loss, but I know he is with Christ and you should have joy in that. God bless his family and friends.

I am sorry to read of Mr.Hultgren's passing. He was my chemistry teacher way back in 1965. I struggled with Chemistry. I think he knew I was trying but just couldn't retain the material as well as others. He showed compassion and understanding and helped me to get through the class. I always appreciated that. I later became a Spanish teacher at Columbus North, retiring after 36 years. I often remembered his example and tried to offer special attention to all my students. He was a star amongst the other teachers at Elston. I am sure that he was an exceptional father and grandfather. Please accept my condolences. Sincerely, Gene Foldenauer

Dear Hultgren family: I can't possibly put into words how sorry I am to hear that Mr. Hultgren has passed away .I will be forever grateful for having had the chance of being his student for two years.Michigan City was truly a better place because he chose to call it home. In my opinion he was the finest man I've ever met and an inspiration to so many others. To call him the best teacher I ever had does not do him justice. I will miss my chemistry teacher .
