FRED L. WHITE, age 79 of Portage, passed away on Wednesday, February 01, 2017.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Barbara (nee Healey) White; two daughters: Kelly (Jim Fitzer) White and Kim White; brothers Steve (Dawn) White and Paul (Denise) White; sister Renelle (John) Densley; and several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his son Kevin Leigh White; parents Paul & Marge White; two sisters: Sandy Bailey and Diane Taylor.

Mr. White was a Navy veteran serving during the Korean War while aboard the USS Philippine Sea, served with the Navy Reserve Seabees and a member of American Legion Post #260. He was a member and former President of The Porter County Home Builders Association. Fred served on several committees, including the Portage Fire Merit Board, Portage High School Building Trades Board, and the Portage Board of Zoning Appeals. Fred helped fundraising for numerous organizations throughout the years. He received multiple awards over the years, including the Portage Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Public Citizen of the Year Award on November 2, 1996.

Family and friends may visit at Pruzin Brothers Funeral Service (2700 Willowcreek, Portage) on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 P.M. A Memorial Service will follow promptly at 7:00 P.M. from the Pruzin Brothers Chapel with Pastor Howard Seal and Pastor Mark Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to VNA Hospice (2401 Valley Dr., Valparaiso, IN 46383) or to Hobart Humane Society (2054 E. S.R. 130, Hobart, IN 46342.

To Barb and family - we didn't know Br. Fred as long as we would have liked but he was a very warm and friendly brother. The blessing is that in Christ we will all share Eternity together. According to my calculations Fred was 16 years old when the Korean war ended on 27 July 1953. Was he in the war? Possibly, but doubtful. If he was I apologize. May he rest in peace.
