Elizabeth “Betty” Jackson, age 82, of Shoreland Hills,, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009 at St. Anthony Memorial Health Care. Services will be held Thursday, Sept. 24 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Don Dempsey officiating. Visitation will be Wed. Sept. 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home, and from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City. She was born Sept. 29, 1926 in Gary, IN to Charles S. and Virginia M. (Greer) Gray, both of whom preceded her in death. On Feb. 2, 1946 in Miller Beach she married John H. Jackson, he preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 2000. Survivng are her sons John C. (Linda) Jackson of Michigan City, Gray R. (Sandra) Jackson of Nunica, MI, Ken S. (Mary Ellen) Jackson, Grand Haven, MI, Jerry D. (Joleen) Jackson of Michigan City, and James H. (Melissa) Jackson of LaPorte; grandchildren Amy, Lisa, Luke, Matthew, Brent, Courtney, Joshua, David, Brian and Savannah, great-grandchildren Franklin, Kasey, Jessica E., Jessica N., Josh, Hunter, Walker, Skylar, Jade, Mia, Natalie, Alex, C.R., Cash, Colten, Caiden and Brady, brothers Gary (Sarah) Gray of Nunica, MI, Glen (Joan) Gray of Grand Haven, MI, sister-in-law Lois Gray of Nunica, MI, many nieces and nephews, and special family friends Sophie, Katie, Flossie and Ginney. She was preceded in death by her brother Charles “Chuck” Gray. Mrs. Jackson had been a trolley driver at Lighthouse Place outlet mall for many years, and had also modeled at Carson’s Dept. Store. Mrs. Jackson enjoyed decoupage, playing the piano, and was the first female bus driver for the Spring Lake, MI school system. She was known as “Aunt Betty” to all the children that rode her bus. She later drove the school bus for Notre Dame School. She was the “Ambassador of the Year” for the state of Indiana in 1997. She was a friend to all, she brightened everyone’s day. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Soup Kitchen.

I knew Betty when I worked Security at Lighthouse Place from 1995-97. I became very fond of Betty because she reminded me so much of my grandmother. Betty was unfailingly polite and the depth of her compassion was extraordinary. Betty loved her family dearly. She always had a twinkle in her eye, but when she spoke of her family, they took on an extra sparkle. When I was on duty at the mall, I would ocassionly hop on the trolley. My excuse was to get from one end of the mall to the other sooner, but the reality was that I could never resist spending a few minutes with Betty. She was indeed a very special person.
