DONALD M. HEYMIG, age 75 of Portage, passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2021.

 

He is survived by his wife Maria Heymig (nee DeJesus-Vasquez) of 51 years; daughter Michelle (Thomas) Cherry; son Donald (Kimberly) Heymig II; three grandchildren: Zachary Cherry, Isabel Heymig, Ava Heymig; sister Patricia (late Leroy) Altgilbers; his nieces and nephews; and his great friends in the Kotlowski Family.  Preceded in death by brother Nicholas Heymig and his parents Nicholas & Mary Heymig.

 

Mr. Heymig was a faithful member of Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church. Don was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Councils #726 in Hammond and #9114 in Portage.  He and Maria both taught C.C.D. classes for 14 years at All Saints Catholic Church in Hammond.  He was a graduate of Gary Edison High School, Class of  1964 and then worked as an operator for Amoco Oil Company for 15 years.

 

Family and friends may gather at Pruzin Brothers Funeral Service (2700 Willowcreek, Portage) on Friday, January 22, 2021 from 2:00-7:00 P.M.  A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, January 23, 2021 beginning at 9:30 A.M. from Pruzin Brothers Chapel and 10:00 A.M. from Nativity of Our Savior Catholic Church (2949 Willowcreek, Portage) with Rev. Kevin McCarthy officiating.  At rest Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.  Masks and social distancing are required.

The Don was a very good man, I remember when he pressure washed the house in Griffith. Then came the time when I paid him a visit and the dog gizmo passed gas right in front of me. Don laughed so hard he went straight to the bathroom. He'll always be rememebered for his kind heart and just a great a dear friend.

I am not exaggerating when I say that if it wasn't for my Uncle Don introducing me to the world of IT I would not be where I am today. This amazing man took time to work with me and teach me and as a result I developed a life long love of this field and it has taken me places I never thought I would go. I haven't seen my uncle in a long time and I'm sad that he is gone now. I do however rejoice in his life and I will always hold dear the memories of talking with him and hearing his stories. Thank you, Uncle Don for helping me and teaching me.

Our condolences go out to the Heymig family for the lose of Don. He is, was, and wil always be remembered. For his kindness, BIG Heart, jokes and just somethings that shouldn't be said. But I'll tell you anyway pressure washing the house in Griffith. This was a moment Maria will never forget and man was it costly but funny. Then comes the dog Gizmo, I'm in Portage visiting him. Mind you I don't have pets never have, so his dog release gas right next to me. I was gagging, I said Gizmo is that your flavor? Damn I had my mouth wide open, Don laughed so hard he ran to the bathroom. Seymour TN. went to visit and we had a blast. Don will never be forgotten as he's touched many lives. Rest In Peace, no more pain my friend! The Don will live in our hearts forever.
