Charles Thomas Janovsky, M.D. passed away Thursday, January 7, 2021 of complications from a surgery and a stroke. Charles was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 14, 1947 to Charles A. Janovsky and Beatamarie (Gough) Janovsky who proceeded him in death. He was raised in Cicero, Illinois and graduated from Fenwick High School in 1965. After graduating with honors from Loyola University, Chicago in 1969, he attended the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine where he received his Medical Doctor degree in 1973. Following a three-year residency program in Family Practice at the University of Missouri in Columbia, he and his family moved to Michigan City where he practiced for more than thirty years at the Medical Group of Michigan City.

Dr. Janovsky was a Board-Certified Family Practitioner and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice and a member of Indiana Medical Association and LaPorte County Medical Society. He served as the LaPorte County Health officer from January 2006 until December 2009. He retired in March 2009.

As the son of a music teacher, he learned to play the clarinet at age seven that led to a lifelong love of music. He played in the Michigan City Municipal Band from 1978 until 2015. For relaxation he played golf and was known as an avid hunter of lost golf balls. He coached his daughter’s high school golf team to the state finals. A big part of his life, he played with his wife, children, and many friends on golf vacations. After his retirement, he enjoyed his gin rummy games and video poker.

He loved being a family physician and taking care of his community. With his colleagues he would sit outside smoking a Macanudo and discussing the practice of medicine.

As a loving husband, father, and grandfather he is survived by his wife of 49 years Theresa (Forkins) Janovsky, his daughters Sarah (Matthew) Foster of Poplar Grove, Illinois and Kathryn (Jesse) Thomas of Michigan City and his son Charles Andrew “Andy” Janovsky of New Carlisle, Indiana. Grandchildren Thomas Foster, James Foster, Sydney Grace Janovsky, Charles Michael Janovsky, Gabriel Thomas, Luke Thomas and Eva Thomas. His sister Dr. Mary Elizabeth (Phillip) DePauw of Granger, Indiana and her family.

On Friday, January 15, 2021 there will be a Mass of Christian Burial at Queen of All Saints Church in Michigan City. Visitation at the church at to take place at 9:00 am followed by mass at 10:00 am with private interment to follow at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Due to COVID-19 mandates, facial masks and social distancing at 6 feet will be required.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. Chuck was a great classmate, and I'm glad that Gene talked him into coming to the 50th so that those of us who could make it were able to see him there. My prayers will be with you and him.

Chuck was a close friend of mine at Fenwick High School(class of 1965). We were in the band together. We had most of our classes together. He beat me at chess on a regular basis. I last saw him at our 50th class reunion. We talked and visited at length. I have many happy memories of our relationship. May God bless him and keep him. My heartfelt condolences to all the family.

My deepest sympathy to Terry and the rest of his family and especially to Mary Beth. Chuck and I were best friends at Fenwick. We were in the band together, but he was the real musician. I took flute lessons from his father, and his Mom, Dad and sister made me feel like one of the family. They invited me to vacation with them, a memory that I cherish. I have so many other memories of our time together. He and his sister were good friends. I convinced Chuck to attend the 50th reunion, but I regret that at the last minute I could not attend.

Chuck and I were in many classes together at Fenwick. I remember him being a really nice guy who was very smart and studied hard and took academics seriously.

Hello Andy. I'm Carol Stewart. Chris Stewart's mom. I want to extend my heartfelt sympathy to u and ur family of the passing of ur father. I will ALWAYS remember ur dad's kindness and support he gave to me and my family. Ur dad spoke of u often and proudly. 'Dr. J' was r family doctor. He was an awesome person and a brilliant doctor. Dr. J was my mentor for my adult family nurse practitioner. He was an excellent teacher. I learned SO much from him. I saw ur dad often on his rounds and 'tagged' along with him when I could. He was always so kind, caring, and compassion to his patients. They ALL loved him. Correction, compassionate . He came to my home after Chris' service and took Chris' friends to lunch at his club. I still remember that kind gesture. I know that ur dad and Chris r in heaven talking about 'bust a move'. ? I cherish ur friendship with Chris. U two did some funny pranks. I loved Chuck (“rhymes with truck”) more than any man I’ve ever known. I was his golf ball hunting buddy, and cherish the times we shared. I am devastated by his passing, and will never forget him. He is the major reason I chose to live and work here in Michigan City. He touched many here, and the world is a lesser place with his passing.

With great sadness we learned of Chuck’s passing. Our deep sympathies to his loving wife Terry and his surviving children Sarah,Andy,Katy and extended family.. He was a prominent and highly respected physician who focused on always trying to do the best for his patients. He served in many ways in the medical community to support and do his part for the hospitals, colleagues,and related disciplines. We remember his feisty and humorous decor. So sorry to hear of Dr. J'S passing. As a much younger person, I enjoyed waiting on him and his family at Mr. Steak. He always treated us respectfully. Over the years of adulthood it was always nice to run into he and his wife too, at Holly's or Galveston. I consider him an icon in our small town of Michigan City. My sympathy to his family and all those close to him.

I was so saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. J. I first met Dr. J at the hospital when he rounded on his patients. He was also my grandma’s doctor. On one visit I took my grandma to, he asked me to come work with him as his office nurse. He was an excellent physician, & truly loved his patients & colleagues, and his family! I had the great pleasure of working for him for over 4 years in his office, & can honesty say I loved working for him! There were many times we would work later, because if a patient had something going on, he was determined to get it figured out, & to leave his patient in a better condition than they were upon arrival. He would go round on his patients before work, at lunch, , & after work. He was very intelligent, caring, & remembered so much about his patients, which I found amazing, as he had a very large practice. He was always so kind, very approachable, sincere, and lived life to the fullest. My life was blessed because I had the pleasure of getting to know & work with him. I have no doubt that he is now an angel in heaven. Even though he was modest, & did not do anything for the recognition, what a legacy he leaves! A truly wonderful man!! Dr J, was my Dr from the start at Medical Group, he used to tell me I was one of his very first patients, he saw me through thick and thin! Dr J. actually cared for his patients, gave me his home phone number when I was going through the loss of my sister. He was more than my Doctor he was a friend to me and helped me through several major decisions in my life, he gave me advice that helped me decide to make a major move to Maui Hawaii. My condolences to his entire family , he was a great man!

To say he was a wonderful man is just not enough. Chuck Janovsky was the kind of doctor that will be hard to equal, let alone replace. The way he practiced medicine should be a model for all those in the profession. One did not even have to be his patient, he was going to give advice and help in any way he could. His passing is such a loss to this community, to the medical field and most of all, to his family and those of us who were fortunate to also call him a friend. May God Bless his soul.

Dr. J was my family's doctor from the time I was a young child until my mid-20s when he retired. He was a wonderful doctor and treated his patients with personal care. One time he called me personally after hours regarding a lab result and even met me at the hospital for further testing. You don't see that type of care and attention anymore, he was great. He will be missed. Praying for his family as they mourn.

He was a wonderful and compassionate doctor who dedicated his life to the practice of medicine. He loved his family and knew how to live joyfully.

He was a good Doctor and good man. God bless him and his family.

We played for decades with Chuck in the MC Mun Band. Teri, we remember fondly the pizza parties you two often hosted following a concert. Playing clarinet together, one week at rehearsal, after hearing my severe cough, Chuck said "Come on, we're going to the Clinic right now - I'm not playing that thing alone!" Dr. J. was truly one of a kind. I have so many fond memories of him. He was an accomplished physician and I owe him a debt of gratitude because he saved my father's life from prostate cancer, which allowed him to live many more years. However, as accomplished as he was being a physician, he was an even better husband, father, grandfather and friend. I hope he is in the great casino in the sky smoking his cigars and playing video poker with Dr. Pejic and all his friends. He will be greatly missed by my wife Diane and my entire extended family.
