CHARLES O. SAUERMAN, age 89, a life-long Crown Point resident, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017, surrounded by his family.
Survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen (nee Biester); three children: Richard “Dick” (Laura) Sauerman, Nancy (Gregory) Forsythe, David (Deborah) Sauerman; seven grandchildren: Richard C. Sauerman, Jr., Joshua (Emily) Sauerman, Daniel (Heather) Forsythe, Ryan (Elizabeth) Forsythe, Brittany and Dominique Sauerman, David Sauerman, Jr.; six great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Sauerman, James, Jackson, Nathaniel, Nicholas, and Natalie Forsythe. Preceded in death by parents, Oscar and Margaret Sauerman, and brother, Robert.
Charles was a life-long Crown Point, IN resident who was a well-known farmer and later, real estate developer. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Crown Point, where he served many years as an elder. He was a former member of Trinity Memorial Lutheran Church in Independence Hill, where he served as an elder and Chairman of the Congregation. He was a board member of the Lutheran Home (now Wittenberg Village), Crown Point, IN and the Crown Point Courthouse Foundation. Charles was actively involved in 4-H, where he showed the 1947 Indiana State Fair Ayrshire Dairy Champion, was a 1948 National 4-H Congress Delegate in Washington DC, and leader of the expansion of the 4-H clubs in Northwest Indiana. His giving spirit was part of his family’s heritage as evidenced by part of the family farm being gifted to the City of Crown Point to become Sauerman Woods Park and Hub Pool. Charles was a huge Cubs fan and one year lost three transistor radios while on his tractor farming and listening to the Cubs games. He was very involved in his children’s lives as a coach of Little League, girls softball, and Pups Basketball. Charles was a graduate of Crown Point High School, Class of 1944 and an Army veteran.
Family and friends may call at Pruzin & Little Funeral Service, 811 E. Franciscan Dr. (south of St. Rd. 231 on St. Rd 55), Crown Point on Thursday, April 6, 2017 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm. Funeral service will be 11:00 am. Friday, April 7, 2017 DIRECTLYfrom Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 250 S. Indiana Ave., Crown Point, with Rev. Lothar Thoelke and Rev. David Kipp officiating. There will one half-hour of visitation at church prior to service. At rest Maplewood Memorial Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Trinity Lutheran Evangelical Church, Crown Point.
