Carolyn Johnson nee Eich, age 68 of Merrillville, passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2010. She is survived by 2 children: Daniel Johnson of Indianapolis, IN and Karen Aaron Cichocki of Collierville, TN; 2 grandchildren: David and Cody Cichocki; parents: Paul and Margie Eich of Merrillville, IN; 4 sisters: Jean Larry Coin of Merrillville, IN, Diane Fred Combs of Michigan City, IN, Mary Beth Eich of Michigan City, IN, and Laura Peter Javorka of Lansing, IL; 1 brother, Terry Diane Eich of Hebron, IN; brother-in-law, William Nida Johnson of Waukesha, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews. Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, David Johnson and sister, Dorothy Magee. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, March 4, 2010 at 10:00 AM directly at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, 5885 Harrison St., Merrillville, with Rev. Roy Beeching officiating. Interment to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Friends may visit with the family at Geisen Funeral Home, 7905 Broadway, Merrillville, IN on Wednesday, March 3rd from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Thursday morning directly at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 10:00 AM. A prayer service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home. Carolyn was a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Church and retired from the Merrillville School System after several years 26 1/2 of teaching. Carolyn was a loving and gracious person, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. One of the ways someone can eulogize a person who has passed is describing the experience of meeting the person for the first time, the person being Carolyn Johnson. I was a student, just beginning 7th grade at Harrison Jr. high 1977. Mr. Smith, my general math teacher told me at the end of the first grading period that transferring me to pre-algebra would present more of a challenge to me than general math and that he felt I could succeed there. Of course I, like many others felt the typical anxiety of starting in a new, bigger school. But now it was even more intimidating to be placed into a class which was already there and having to catch up with the rest of the class. During the first few minutes the first day of pre-algebra, Mrs. Johnson with her warm smile and easy-going nature INSTANTLY made my feelings of angst disappear! She had the ability to connect with her students and her students connected with her. On behalf of myself and all of your former students, thank you, Carolyn, for your outstanding contribution to our learning. You've made learning enjoyable. But most of all, WE WILL MISS YOU! Carolyn was a wonderful friend and colleague with whom I shared many professional experiences for over 25 years. Personally, among other things, we shared a love for flowers and gardening. She touched many lives in a very positive way.

Carolyn was a remarkable woman, fantastic educator, and treasured friend. My prayers go out to the family at this difficult time.

Carolyn was a highly respected colleague and friend of 25 years. Her personal and professional ethics and devotion to teaching were always at the highest level. We will miss her.
