Betty “Vasiliki” Giannopoulos

June 28, 1929 - May 18, 2020

Betty “Vasiliki” Giannopoulos (neé Papadimitriou), age 89, of Ogden Dunes, IN, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, May 18, 2020.

Beloved wife of her late husband, Chris Giannopoulos. She is survived by her children: Athena (Richard) Hassan, Julie (Mark) Schultz, and Nickie (Neale) Giannopoulos Byrnes; and grandchildren: Ashley Szybala, Luke Schultz and Alex Byrnes. She is also survived by her brother, Menios (Kaliope) Papas. Betty was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and loved being with her family and friends.

Betty was a devout member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She retired from The Anderson Company where she worked for twenty-five years. She was a beloved member of the Ogden Dunes community and greatly treasured her time spent on the beach. She was an enthusiastic cook, a passionate gardener, and truly loved animals and nature. True to her Greek heritage, Betty was always ready to engage in lively conversations on politics and world events.

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113^th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307 from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Due to Covid-19, visitation will be limited to 25 people at any one-time, social distancing at 6 feet and face masks will be required.

Funeral Services will be private due to Covid-19 restrictions. Betty will be laid to rest at Calumet Park Cemetery, 2305 West 73^rd Ave., Merrillville, IN 46410.

During this difficult time of private services due to COVID-19, you may show your support by participating in the “Hugs from Home” program where your message of love and support will be attached to a balloon and placed in the chapel for the family. Athena, Julie, Nickie, I am very sad to hear about the passing of your mom. She was a very special lady and I have many fond memories of her as we were growing up as kids in Aetna. SHE WAS 1 IN A MILLION, A VERY SPECIAL PERSON! I wish life wasn't so busy, I know Joni and I talked several times about wanting to visit with her over the past couple of years. She will be dearly missed! You were truly blessed with 2 great parents. I am sorry that I could not attend the service, I have 12 hour days Mon.-Fri. driving to Pepsi Distribution Centers all over the Midwest and get home late every night.

Athena, Julie and Nickie, I am so sorry for your loss. There are so many memories of all of us as we were growing up. I know this is a difficult time, but keep in mind, she lived a wonderful life and now she is at peace. I wanted to be there for you, but I am at very high risk and cannot be near anyone. Even now that I have returned to work, I am isolated. When things get a little more normal, we can meet and talk about all the good old days. I love you all. Zoe se sas.

I am heartbroken after hearing of your beautiful Moms passing. One of the nicest women I have ever met. No matter how much we prepare ourselves for the passing of our parents we are never prepared for the emptiness that is left in our hearts once they’re gone.
