Bernice Wilson Curry passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2020. Born September 16, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary Wilson of Apollo, PA. Bernice grew up in Apollo, PA and graduated from Apollo High School in 1945. On April 24, 1947 she married the love of her life, James DuWayne Curry. In 1962 they moved to Trail Creek in Michigan City, IN where she resided for most of the rest of her life. Bernice joined First Presbyterian Church where she was a member for over 50 years. She was a very active member of the church belonging to the Wednesday Evening Circle, was President of the Woman’s Association several times and was awarded the “Woman’s Association Woman of the Year.” She was an Elder of the Church and taught Sunday School. She was assistant teacher at the First Presbyterian Nursery School for many years. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary at Memorial Hospital and then St. Anthony’s when Memorial closed.
Bernice also sponsored sponsored “Miss Indiana” candidat es at her home, which was a yearly highlight for her. She was a member of the Met N Et Club which was a homemakers club in the Trail Creek community. She loved making crafts, baking and nature. She was devoted to her husband, her children and the Lord.
Bernice is preceded in death by her husband, James DuWayne Curry, Sr., her two sisters Pearl Smith and Lorraine Caramellino and her grandson James Curry III.
She is survived by her children, Pamela Hay (Paul) of LaPorte, IN, James Curry Jr. (Linda) of Wolcottville, IN and Constance Shepard (Arthur) of Columbia, SC. She is also survived by her Grandchildren, Paul Jr., Monica, Adam, Cathy, Lorelee, Kyeesha and Hope, 16 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Bernice was fun loving, kind and a generous soul and well loved by all. As one family member put it, “God broke the mold when he made her the kindest, lovingest person you could ever know.” She will be missed! Due to Covid19 a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Geisen-Carlisle Funeral & Cremation Services, 613 Washington St. Michigan City, IN 46360.
