Agnes S. Stalbaum, age 92, of Ijamsville, Maryland, formerly of Michigan City, age 92, died Monday, March 30, 2009 at Goodwill Mennonite Retirement Community in Grantsville, MD.
Funeral services will be conducted at Carlisle Funeral Home on Friday, April 3, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Susan Aikman officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home, and again on Friday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be conducted at Graceland Cemetery in Valparaiso.
Agnes was born on November 11, 1916 in Bannock, Ohio to Frank and Elizabeth (Kocur) Modla, both of whom preceded her in death. On October 8, 1938 in Flatrock, MI she married James G. Stalbaum who preceded her in death on August 4, 1992.
Surviving are her sons, James (Judy) Stalbaum of Springville, TN and Ronald (Janis) Stalbaum of Ijamsville, MD, daughter Marion L. Chodzko, Oaklawn, IL, her grandchildren, Jeffrey (Jennifer), John (Carrie), Michael (fiancé Jessica Wyatt) , and Amanda Stalbaum, and Carla (Demetrius) Morris. She is also survived by 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchildren, and brother: Michael (Julia) Modla of Oak Lawn, IL.
She was preceded in death by her brothers John, Frank and Fred Modla, sister Sophie Skycki., daughter in law, Carlene Stalbaum and son in law Al Chodzko.
Agnes was a founding and faithful member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church, member of Cool spring Volunteer Fire Dept. Ladies Auxilary Fireflies, and the Coolspring Township Democratic Club. Agnes was a wonderful cook and baker. She often took 1st place honors at the LaPorte Co. Fair, and won blue ribbons for her cooking skill. Her delicious meals were enjoyed by many.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff and health aides in Memory Lane and East Hall. A special thank you to Emily Maust, a hospice volunteer who visited with Agnes every day for four months. Emily gave loving care and comfort to Agnes.
