William W. Mundell, age 73, of Valparaiso, IN; formerly of Portage, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2022.
William is survived by his wife, Jolene E. Mundell (nee Pawlicki); children: Matthew E. Mundell, Mark J. (Amy) Mundell, and Jessica A. (Peter) Delinck; grandchildren: Luke Mundell, Thomas Mundell, Vincent Delinck, and Edward Delinck; brother, Robert L. (Cindy) Mundell; sisters: Susan E. (Robert) Simpson and Melissa R. (Kenneth) Dike; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
William was preceded in death by his mother, Kathleen R. Kemp (nee Walter); sister, Marcia Snyder; brother-in-law, Jeffrey Wilkie; grandparents: James and Kathryn Walter; nephew, Douglas Snyder; and many loved aunts and uncles.
Bill was a graduate of Merrillville High School, Class of 1967. He earned his B.S. in finance at Purdue University in 1972 and his M.B.A. from University of Chicago IN 1976. He worked for over 39 years at Inland/Arcelor Mittal steel mills and retired as the Director of Taxes, USA. Affiliations Bill had as the Director included: American Iron and Steel Institute Tax Committee, Tax Executives Institution, Indiana Manufacturers Association Tax Committee, Indiana State Chamber of Commerce Tax Commission and Chicago Tax Club. Bill led a very successful legislative property tax reform in the State of Indiana. He was instrumental in a very successful Federal Tax Audit, which propelled him to the top of his noteworthy career. He was considered by many as a tax genius as he managed the transition for International Tax Implications and Mergers and Acquisitions, the sale of Inland Steel, launching the steel company into the global market.
He enjoyed a full, well-lived, joyful life — especially spending time with his children and grandchildren (all the apples of his eye). He was a “jack of all trades” and could do almost anything he put his mind to. Bill loved woodworking, crosswords, golfing and traveling on many family vacations throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. In later years, he enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Alaska, Maine and numerous foreign countries; his favorite was visiting Ireland!
Bill enjoyed entertaining friends and family for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day picnics, and Christmas parties. He was very welcoming to all relatives and friends, sharing our home to visit, swim, fish, and golf (on our home course which he and family helped create on our property).
Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
