WANDA V. BURKE (nee Haj), age 90, a 43-year resident of Merrillville, formerly of Gary, passed away Sunday, January 27, 2013. She was born in Gary on March 14, 1922 to Maryann and Frank Haj who were from Poland. She is survived by her son, John (Allana) Burke and her daughter, Dr. Sharon Burke. She was the proud grandmother of Jason, Anthony, Adam (Natalia) and Betsy (Benjamin) and great grandmother of Emmylou and Clara. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John William and son, Richard. Wanda was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Merrillville. She had been active in the PTA of Holy Angels grade school, serving as President for one school year. Wanda was in the Women’s Club of Bishop Noll High School (Noll Institute). She worked as office coordinator for orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Leo K. Cooper until he closed his practice in Gary. As of late, she was involved with Harvest House and SS. Peter & Paul parish choir. A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, March 14, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. from SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 5885 Harrison St., Merrillville. Memorials in Wanda’s name may be made to SS. Peter & Paul Building Transformation Fund and would be greatly appreciated. Wanda was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. Above all, she loved caring for her family and her home and she had wonderful sense of humor.
