Robert E. “Butch” Echterling, age 97, of Cedar Lake, IN, passed away on Friday, June 2, 2023.
Robert is survived by his daughters: Lynn E. Cole and Robin (James) Kiraly; grandchildren: Shannon (Wade) Vyhnanek and Masen G. Cole; great-grandchildren: Sophia Vyhnanek and Audee Vyhnanek.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Margaret “Maggie”; parents: Bert and Grace Echterling; and son-in-law, Randy G. Cole.
Robert joined the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country starting at the young age of 17 during WWII and later re-enlisting during the Korean Conflict. He was an operating engineer for Operating Engineers Union Local 150. He was involved with many organizations, including: American Legion Post 261, Moose Lodge 260, VFW Post 717, The Lion’s Club and The Indiana Freemasons. Butch enjoyed bowling and traveled the country participating in many national tournaments. Butch and Maggie attended numerous Super Bowl games. They frequently attended Purdue and Notre Dame football games, where they were famous for their Bloody Mary’s, and enjoying many an Early Times and water. They also attended many Indy car races.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, 606 E. 113th Ave., Crown Point, IN 46307 from 2:00 PM until the time of the Funeral Service at 6:00 PM.
