Richard R. Criswell, 91 of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023.
He was born on January 18, 1932 to Thomas and Elizabeth (Schneider) Criswell who preceded him in death.
Richard is survived by his children: Bill (Sandy), Barry (Tamara), Dale, and Bruce (Rosa) Criswell; grandchildren: Allison (Arron) Hinds, Holly (Barry) Wojcik, Sara Criswell, Alex Criswell, Blythe Criswell, Rebekah Criswell, and Jenny Criswell; and great grandchildren: Olivia, Emilia, and Sophie Hinds.
He was also preceded in death by his wife: Nancy; son: Daniel Criswell; brother: Jack Criswell; and sisters: Marge Rotzien, Eleanor Venice, and Audrey Aldridge.
Richard was an Elston High School graduate in 1949. He started at Frey Brothers Lumbar Yard and retired from Bethlehem Steel as a turn Foreman after 27 years of service. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, gardening, and was a self-taught chef. Richard officiated for High School basketball and baseball and was working within a group with Jerry Karstens, Buck Woodard, and Jim Emerich. He was also a part of a group that founded I C baseball in Michigan City. He was an avid Chicago sports fan along with the Big Ten Conference.
Richard married the love of his life, Nancy Criswell on February 3, 1951. They enjoyed traveling the entire United States and the Canadian Rockies. His proudest travel was to take his family to vacation up to the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota. These trips included canoeing, fishing, camping out in the pristine wilderness and the lakes of the boundary waters.
Family and friends are invited for a visitation on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 from 11:00 am until the time of service at 1:00 pm at Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington Street, Michigan City, Indiana 46304 with Pastor Ericka Parkinson of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
