Richard Jon Kieft

May 12, 1955 - February 26, 2021

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Jon Kieft (Rico) on Friday, February 26, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer. Rick’s passion for his family, music, and the Chicago Bears will live on through the legacy and fond memories he leaves behind.

Born May 12, 1955 in Michigan City, Indiana to the late Harold and Marian Kieft, Rick graduated from Elston High School (1973) and later graduated from Valparaiso University (1977). Many remember dancing late into the night while Rick and his band, City Limits performed Chicago’s greatest hits and other classic rock each weekend to packed local bars. Music was Rick’s number one obsession throughout high school and college until he met and married the love of his life, Pamela Harsha in 1977. Rick is survived by his bride of 43 years, sons Kevin (Gillian) of Lakeland Florida and Brian (Amanda) of Michigan City and daughter, Kelli of Michigan City. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Isabelle, Kensleigh, Andre, Luke, Hermione, Emma, and Aislinn and his brother, James Kieft (Gayla) of South Bend and many nieces and nephews. .

After retiring from Whirlpool Corporation, Rick enjoyed spending time with his family and playing golf. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to him. He loved a quiet evening on the back deck with his beautiful wife, a glass of wine, his favorite “Rick Greys” and some music to accompany his air guitar performances. When not on the deck, Rick was often found in his “Bears Den”, watching old movies, cheering on the Bears, Notre Dame, the Blackhawks or the White Sox. May one of them win a championship in his honor this year!

A memorial and celebration of life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions and expressions of sympathy may be made to Rick’s family.

From the very first time I met Uncle Rick in 1996 he welcomed me in to your Family with open arms, a huge smile and unforgettable laugh. I will always remember his perfectly stocked beer fridge, his love of hosting, the Bear's Den and all of his Coca Cola memorabilia and, of course, the Christmas Village. He gave Ryan and I some pretty great advice over the years and we will cherish those memories always. Love and hugs.

Remembering many a day at the Kieft residence during my childhood on Hendricks and South Porter streets and having a blast with the entire family. Rick had a keen sense of humor with an infectious laugh that will never be forgotten. My heartfelt thoughts to Pam and the entire family.

We were very sad to hear of Ricks passing. He was a wonderful brother in law. Our memories of him include; the Bears den, card playing, trips to the boat but most of all I remember Ricks gift of music. He could play anything. I knew him as a City Limits member before he met my sister . In fact , I have been listening to Earth Wind and Fire music in his honor since I got the news. Rest In Peace my brother. I am so sorry for your loss, Rick was too young and too early in his retirement to pass. I remember Christmas parties at the Kieft house and Rick's elaborate Christmas village. He always had a smile. My sincere sympathy for your loss.

I am deeply saddened for your family to hear of Rick's passing. I played in City Limits along with Rick and had many great times and memories. A truly great guy.

I met Rick at Eastport Scool and remained friends for life. Rick, myself, Debbie and Lance along with a few others shared 6 years of fun times including including classes, field trips to Chicago and Roller Skating in New Buffalo on weekends.So happy our son was able to become friends with Rick's son Kevin. We are all blessed to have known Rick and share his life. Will always remember listening and dancing to the music of City Limits. GOD BLESS YOU RICK...
