Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Showers; mother: Violet Kotarski; father, William Chumley; brother, Thomas Chumley; grandson, Cameron Ganjani; and great-grandson, Asher Puntillo.
Born in Kentucky, Patricia moved to Cedar Lake, IN when she was 4 years old. She was an emotional and caring person who was well-loved by many.
Patricia went back to school as an adult earning her bachelors and masters degrees in elementary education. She spent her career teaching in the Chicago Public Schools. Although she taught different grades, second and third were her favorite by far. Many of her students would contact her long after they had graduated to express the difference she had made in their lives.
Patricia held a strong belief in God and the Christian faith. She and Henry went to church every Sunday and made sure to share their beliefs with their family. Patricia was active in her church as a Sunday school teacher, class president, choir member and part of the women’s bible study group.
Collecting was just one of the things that Patricia was passionate about. She collected dolls, bears, salt & pepper shakers, coins and many other things. Another thing she enjoyed was music. Everything from country, to classic rock, 50’s and pop to her number one favorite, Elvis. She would make tapes, then CD’s and finally playlists of her favorite songs. Patricia liked to dance and enjoyed teaching others her moves like The Stroll, Pony and bits of Swing.
There is nothing like escaping with a good book and Patricia would read daily. She liked going to the bookstore and would borrow suggested titles from friends and family. There was always a stack of books next to her chair. She liked to get her line-up ready in the order she wanted to read them. A gift card to Barnes and Noble was always a welcome gift.
Adventure and travel were in her blood. Although she wouldn’t fly, she took many road trips, visiting places like Nevada, Florida, Washington DC, Kentucky, Williamsburg, Niagara Falls and many more. Driving gave her peace and she would often jump in the car and go.
One thing that stands out most for those that were close to Patricia was her love of animals. She would go out of her way, often to the extreme, to help or save animals in need. She had her dogs, but also donated money and materials to different organizations involved in animal welfare. Both domestic and wild animals were important to her. She worried and cared for animals of all types, rescuing as many as she could.
Patricia loved her family and she will forever be carried in the hearts of those who knew her.
