Myrtle B. Bessette, age 90, of Crown Point, IN, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2021.
Myrtle is survived by her children; Leonard (Linnea) Bessette, Virginia (Lanny) Potter, Cecilia Bessette, Helen Bessette (Shaun Doyle), Margaret (Jose) Hernandez; grandchildren: Peter Bessette, Elizabeth Bessette, Philip (Hillary) Bessette, Joshua (Sherri) Potter, Katherine (Miles) Taylor, James (Ryan) Potter, Kimberly Collins, Jacqueline Collins (Jeremy Myers) and Christiana Richardson; great-grandchildren: Thomas Taylor, Jenna Potter, Abigail Taylor, Katelyn Potter, Grace Taylor, James Potter, Primrose Richardson, Dragan Richardson and Elsie Bessette; sister, Nancy McColly.
Myrtle was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Bessette; parents: Clarence and Stella Veach; brothers: Clarence Veach Jr., Robert Veach, Richard Veach and Jon Veach.
Born in Gary in 1931, she moved with her family to Crown Point for a few years. When the family returned to Gary they lived above the family business, Veach Florist.
She graduated from Lew Wallace High School in 1949, then attended Nurses Training at Methodist Hospital. She graduated in 1954 the same month she married her husband Bill.
Over their 50 plus years of marriage they raised their 5 talented, funny, ridiculous children in a not-really-big-enough house in Crown Point. Music was everywhere in their home.
After working as a nurse for Lake County she became a school nurse for the Crown Point Community School Corp. taking care of the elementary school children in the city, spending the last many years before her retirement specifically at MacArthur School.
In later years, she and her husband enjoyed taking cruises, going to many, many concerts performed by their children and grandchildren and spending time at their beloved cottage on the Tippecanoe, “A Place To Bessette’n”.
Gram, Mom, Myrtle, Barb was a talented singer and artist. She was funny and sweet and kind and ornery. She loved and accepted everyone, but wasn’t afraid to tell you to to “shut up” if she thought you needed it. She touched so many lives with her grace and love. She will be sorely missed by her ridiculous children and their families, as well as all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family, who will forward donations to St. Joseph Oratory in Montreal, Canada.
Services will be private with a Celebration of Life at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Geisen Funeral, Cremation & Reception Centre, Crown Point, IN.
