MICHAEL A. SOUTHERN, age 75, a longtime Crown Point resident, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015. He is survived by his parents Mary & Dr. Joseph Sewell; two brothers: James & Kevin Sewell and their daughters: Janice & Katie, and Jessica Sewell; his biological mother Elvera Kraus; and his biological brother Robert (Laura) Jurich. Mr. Southern was a member of 1st Presbyterian Church in Crown Point. Michael was a graduate of Crown Point High School, a graduate of Purdue University, a registered nurse, and retired from Indiana State Prison. He had participated in a Barber Shop Chorus for many years and was a Horse and Pony Leader for the 4-H for several years. Michael was also an Army Veteran who proudly served his country. Family and friends may call at Pruzin & Little Funeral Service (811 E. Franciscan Dr., Crown Point) on Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 11:30 A.M. from Pruzin & Little Chapel with Rev. David Wood officiating. He will be laid to rest at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville. Memorials are preferred to Diabetes Association or American Heart Association.

I worked with Mike at the prison for 10+ years. I have heard him talk of all his family-he loved you all dearly. I also had the privelage to see him perform with his Barber Shop Chorus for valentines day once-we all loved it! He was always laughing and helping someone... I will miss him dearly-but I am so glad he was a part of my life- He came to my only sons baby shower and 1st birthday. What a great guy..

Our lives have taken us to central Tenn. so we haven't seen each other for several months. My favorite memory of Mike was when I was about 12 years old. There was an open grate bridge over a creek on the gravel road between Sewell's and Gregory's. I was the only kid whose horse would not cross the bridge, so I had to go through Gregory's pasture to join the group. One day Mike saw it and came to help. He told me to get off, grabbed the reins, made my horse back onto the bridge, and made her stand in the middle of the bridge unitl she calmed down. He told me to get on and made her back across the bridge a couple of times. Then he instructed me back her across the bridge. This was the method I used for a while, and eventually my horse crossed the bridge without my having to get off or go backwards. Thanks, Mike, for helping me with my horse.
