Maurits van Gemeren, age 91, of Michigan City, IN passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2020. He was born October 7, 1928 in Gouda, Netherlands to Jan and Janetje (van der Sluis) van Gemeren who preceded him in death. Maurits was married on June 2, 1954 in Rotterdam, Netherlands to Adriana F. de Bruin who also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his children: Cynthia I. (Paul) Freel and John E. (Amy) van Gemeren; grandchildren: Matthew J. (C.J. Sexton) Freel, Kelly N. (Matthew) Reiser, Megan A. van Gemeren, and Noah J. van Gemeren; great-grandchildren: Addison A. Reiser and Jax M. Reiser; sisters: Koosje “Toos” Marshall of Michigan City and Adriana Verkuil of the Netherlands.

Maurits was a member of Evergreen Baptist Church. He retired from Joy Manufacturing as a machinist with over 30 years of service. Maurits loved fishing on his boat, “Aqua Mate”, with family and friends.

Due to CDC guidelines regarding Covid-19 and the health of our community, private services will be handled by Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home and will take place at Evergreen Baptist Church, Michigan City, IN, with Rev. Jonathan A. Rumley officiating.

Burial will take place at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Maurits may be given to charity of donor’s choice.

My deepest sympathies to the entire family. I will certainly miss his smiling face and friendly wave in the neighborhood.

Maurits has been our neighbor for about 62 years. He was a very kind, thoughtful and thankful man. I can still remember him coming home after work from Joy with his lunch box in his hand and was always happy. He dearly loved his wife Adriana and his children Cindy and John. God surely welcomed him into heaven with open arms. So sorry for Cindy, John and your family

I never got a chance to meet you, but I always heard nothing but good things about you. Rest easy, great-uncle Maurits.

My condolences to the family. Maurits was my favorite neighbor. We had many good conversations and I enjoyed his smoked salmon he would share with me. He will be missed.

I am so sorry for your loss. Maurits was a special man. He will be greatly missed.

We were blessed to know Maurits! I remember him telling us about teaching his grandkids to water ski - and he must have been at least in his mid-60's then. And whenever he came into the church to change the outdoor sign, he would keep me updated on all of you. He sure loved you all. And no matter what, he had that wonderful smile! I will miss him.
