MARIA A. BAMIAGIS, age 65 of East Chicago, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2016.

She is survived by her husband Spiros Bamiatzis of 41 years; son Alex (Kristin Oberlander) Bamiagis; daughter Sophia Ourania Bamiatzis; mother Josefina Cavazos; siblings: Lorenzo (Nancy) Cavazos, Cynthia (John) Schuyler, Steve (Vilma) Cavazos, Lourdes (Roberto) Cisneros; many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by father Margarito Cavazos.

Maria was a graduate of East Chicago Washington High School, Class of 1969. She received an undergraduate degree from Ball State University, where she was selected as a Fulbright Scholar. She then graduated from Indiana University Northwest with a Masters degree in Education. She also earned a second Masters degree in Educational Diagnostics from St. Thomas University in Houston, TX. She then went on to teach several grades at many schools across the country. Maria enjoyed dancing, cooking, reading, listening to Motown music, shopping, helping her students, and most importantly, spending time with her family and friends.

Family and friends may call at Pruzin & Little Funeral Service, 811 E. Franciscan Dr., Crown Point (south of St. Rd. 231 on St. Rd. 55) on Sunday, February 21, 2016 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a Trisagion service at 2:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be Monday, February 22, 2016 beginning at 9:00 a.m. from Pruzin & Little Chapel with funeral services following at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Ted Poteres and Rev. George Pappas officiating. At rest Ridgelawn Cemetery.  Memorials in her name are preferred to: Vova Ida Therapeutics, 5500 Military Trail #22-119 Jupiter, FL 33458

Maria was a gracious and tender-hearted soul. She was such a delight to work with in HISD and had a kind word every time we met at meetings. I was shocked to find out Maria has transitioned. She will be remembered with very fond memories; her smile, light-heartedness, singing carefree songs, and just loving life. Though we lost touch when she retired, I will miss her. Even though I had not talked to Maria in the last year, I always thought of her being there. Knowing that she was sick without me knowing and that shes now gone and I never got to talk to her is killing me. I hope shes resting in peace and look forward to seeing her again sometime. Bamiagis Family, Im not sure if you remember me, but Ill never forget you, Maria and family. I helped with care when she was in Dyer. I know we only crossed paths for a short time and the circumstances were dire, but meeting you has impacted me in such a profound way. To witness such a rare and pure love was truly a gift. From the first day you came to us at Dyer, I honestly left that night feeling thunderstruck. Id never witnessed a more devoted and loving family. My deepest condolences on your loss.
