Jack Patterson, NR5T left a message on February 28, 2021:
My name is Jack Patterson, NR5T I am located in Natchez, MS. I truly consider Lionel a good friend. Although I never had the opportunity to meet Lionel in person, I did speak to him on HAM radio back in the mid 80's on the radio when I was visiting my uncle and cousins in Gary, IN. We were on the repeater he owned in Gary. He heard me talking to W9SUS Leroy in Chicago on their W9YPC repeater. Lionel spoke to me on the Chicago repeater until I was out of range and he hung around until I was in range of his repeater. We discussed who my family was and where they lived there in Gary. Lionel guided me right by my uncle's business, Powers and Son Construction company and on top of that he talked me to his residence. Of course this was before GPS and navigation software. I have always been very grateful for his help that night. That was my first encounter with Lionel, It is a fond memory. Of course I have to many to mention all of them but we really enjoyed him on Amateur Radio over the years. I had a lot of conversations and fun on radio with him. He had a very pleasant and easy going personality. I was very sad to hear of his passing. We had just spoke on the radio about a week or so before he passed. I had not spoken with him since the pandemic started, If I did it was only once. It was a shock to hear of his passing. I was very happy to hear him back on the radio after a long absence and I told him so. I told me his he was planning to spend more time on the air, which I was glad to hear. He and I carried on quite a bit of nonsense at times. A really fun person. Since seeing a picture of him for the first time, I would have told him you have the right face for radio. It is only meant as a joke. I know we would have had some fun with that one. I will truly miss my fellow HAM, buddy and very good friend. You will be missed. Rest in peace Jack Patterson, NR5T

I just wanted to send my thoughts and prayers out to Mr. Lionel's family and friends. I only knew Lionel for about 6 months as I met him on the amateur radio. He taught me so much in this little time about radio and more importantly life in general. He gave me great advice on all things radio related. He was a genius at all aspects of it and was VERY happy to share. I had the privilege of meeting him in person one day and we talked for about 2 hours about radio, life and many other topics. Rest in Peace Lionel and may God bless you and your family. It was an honor to meet you. Dustin - KD9QGP
